Google updates mobile device management software

Google has upgraded its mobile device management (MDM) services for smartphones and tablets based on its own Android operating system. The services also support devices running Apple's iOS or Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating systems, according to the company.

Cortex-A8 dev board takes on the BeagleBoard-xM

Embest is shipping a single board computer based on the Texas Instruments Cortex-A8-based DM3730 or AM3715 system on chips. The DevKit8500D — also available from Premier Farnell's Element14 engineering community as the DM3730-EVK Evaluation Kit — is equipped with DVI-D, Ethernet, USB 2.0, and serial expansion interfaces, plus options including touchscreens, wireless modules, and cameras.

Tiny box PC has sealed aluminum case

Kontron announced a fanless embedded computer measuring just 4.8 x 3.9 x 2.09 inches. Based on Intel Atom Z510 (1.1GHz) or Z530 (1.6GHz) processors, the MicroSpace MPC-pOne includes up to 2GB of RAM, a microSD slot, and optional solid state disk (SSD) or hard disk storage, according to the company.

Google Music streaming service launches on Android Market

Google has launched its Google Music service, featuring major artists on labels including Universal, Sony, and EMI. Google Music offers over 13 million songs at prices ranging from $0.99 to $1.29, automatically syncs a users' music library across devices, and lets users share songs on Google+.

Android tablet mimics iPad display specs

Archos announced an Android 2.3 tablet with an iPad-like display: 9.7 inches, 1024 x 768 pixels, and IPS (in-plane switching). The Arnova 9 G2 is equipped with a single-core 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, a front-facing videocam, plus micro-USB, USB, and microSD connections — but so far, no price tag.

In-memory DBMS boosts Java, SQL, and HA capabilities

McObject has upgraded its ExtremeDB in-memory, embedded database, adding a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver. ExtremeDB 4.5 improves performance in several areas, adds more efficient and scalable versions of popular database indexes, improves SQL and High Availability (HA) interfaces, and optimizes the HA edition for a Solace Message Router device to improve performance, claims the company.

Atom-powered panel PCs have CAN and Wi-Fi options

Datasound Laboratories Ltd. (DSL) announced seven- and 15-inch panel PCs that employ Intel Atom N270 processors and offer optional CAN (controller area networking) connectivity. The FAS700-A16B and FAS150-A16B each include IP65-rated front bezels, three USB 2.0 ports and a serial port, VGA outputs, plus optional Wi-Fi, the company says.

Adlink announced a rugged, extended-temperature PC/104-Plus single board computer (SBC) with an Intel Atom E600 clocked at up to 1.6GHz. The CoreModule 720 includes up to 2GB of soldered DDR2 RAM and an optional solid state drive up to 16GB, an SDIO/MMC socket, SATA connectors, plus gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, serial, DVI, LVDS, and CAN connectivity.

Qualcomm announces new mobile chips, 4G LTE tech

Qualcomm announced eight new Snapdragon mobile processors, as well as performance upgrades for four existing models. Adding that its Gobi 4000 4G LTE cellular modules are shipping to OEMs, the company also promoted “Game Command,” an app designed to help Android users locate and download Snapdragon-specific games.

OpenSUSE 12.1 ships with GNOME 3.2, SystemD, Snapper, Go tools

The OpenSUSE project released version 12.1 of its enterprise-focused Linux distribution, featuring Linux 3.1, GNOME 3.2 and support for KDE's “OwnCloud” cloud platform. OpenSUSE 12.1 introduces the SystemD configuration utility and Google's Go programming language, and further integrates the Btrfs file-system with a “Snapper” tool for rolling back system updates and configuration changes.

PandaBoard demo’d running Android 4.0

PandaBoard.org's community-driven PandaBoard is the first device to run Android 4.0, according to Texas Instruments (TI) and the Android Open-Source Project (AOSP). Based on TI's dual-core, 1GHz OMAP4430 processor — similar to the OMAP4460 available in the soon-to-ship Samsung Galaxy Nexus — the PandaBoard has been demonstrated on YouTube running an experimental build of “Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Computer-on-module market set to explode, says VDC

Axiomtek announced a 3.5-inch single board computer with a choice of 1.0GHz AMD G-Series processors: either the single-core T40R or the dual-core T40E. The Capa111 accepts up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, includes LVDS and VGA video outputs, and sports dual gigabit Ethernet ports, according to the company.
