Second Android Samsung phone heads for T-Mobile

Samsung Mobile and T-Mobile announced a new Android phone to be offered on the carrier's U.S. 3G network. The Samsung Behold II offers a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, plus WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a five-megapixel camera, say the companies.

Adobe player to debut first on Palm Pre

[Updated: Oct. 6] — Adobe has announced Flash Player 10.1, multimedia software that will run on a bevy of smartphones, smartbooks, PCs, and other connected devices, starting with Palm WebOS (Palm Pre) and Windows Mobile later this year. Early next year, the “full desktop” media player will reach Android and Symbian platforms, says the company.

Autonomous robot runs Linux on Intel Atom

Vstone has announced a two-legged humanoid robot that sports an onboard, Intel Atom-based PC. The “Robovie-PC” can walk on joints that offer six degrees of freedom, offers an accelerometer and gyro sensors, includes a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and has a body padded with polyurethane foam, says the company.

Ion-equipped Mini-ITX board gains PCI Express

Zotac has released a Mini-ITX motherboard that combines Intel Atom processors with Nvidia's Ion northbridge/southbridge combo. The “Ion ITX-F” includes Atom 230 or 330 CPUs, supports HD video playback, sports an HDMI connector and dual S/PDIF audio outputs, and offers a PCI Express x16 expansion slot, the company says.

Plug computer design used for storage docking station

Seagate announced a hard disk drive (HDD) network adapter and docking station called the FreeAgent DockStar, based on Marvell's Linux-based SheevaPlug Plug Computer reference design. Meanwhile, Real Time Logic's Linux-compatible application web server software has been released in a SheevaPlug-compatible version.

Axiomtek announced a fanless, industrial “shoebox” PC with four expansion slots and extended temperature support. The rugged IPC914-210-FL offers an Intel 945GME Express chipset, and supports Intel Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, and Celeron M CPUs, with up to 4GB DDR2 memory and dual gigabit Ethernet ports, says the company.

Nvidia GPU targets high-performance computing, too

Nvidia has announced a “next-generation” GPU (graphics processing unit) architecture code-named “Fermi.” Employing more than three billion transistors and 512 “Cuda” cores, the architecture will let GPUs double as “general-purpose parallel computing processors,” the company says.

AdelaVoice is shipping a voice-enabled MID that's tuned to social networking sites. The Lighthouse SQ7 is based on SmartDevices' ARM11-based SmartQ7 design, offering a seven-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen, 128MB of RAM, 1GB of flash, WiFi, and an Ubuntu Linux-based interface with voice-enabled Facebook and Twitter updates.

The “1070 – PhidgetSBC” is equipped with an Ethernet port, four USB ports, and a WiFi USB adapter, and is available with an integrated PhidgetInterfaceKit 8/8/8 I/O board.

Dell ships first laptop with Linux fast-boot tech

Dell is shipping the first laptop offering its MontaVista-designed fast-boot technology. The Latitude Z laptop runs Windows 7 on an Intel Core 2 Duo, but also offers a TI-built, ARM-based module running the Linux-based “Latitude ON” technology, touted for instant access to email and the web with minimal power usage.

Real-time JVM rev’d with BeagleBoard support

Aonix announced a new release of its real-time Java virtual machine (JVM) for embedded and real-time systems, adding support for Texas Instruments' ARM Cortex-A8-based BeagleBoard. The Linux-compatible “PERC Ultra 5.3” also enables the use of AWT/Swing graphics libraries and provides support for Java Agent and java.lang.instrument, says the company.

OMAP3x SoC rev’d to 720MHz

Texas Instruments is shipping faster versions of its OMAP3530 system-on-chip (SoC) and evaluation module (EVM). The “OMAP3530 Rev E” version clocks up the ARM Cortex-A8 core from 600MHz to 720MHz,and upgrades the SoC's TMS320C64x+ DSP (digital signal processor) from 430MHz to 520MHz, says the company.

EPIC SBC has SUMIT and MiniBlade interfaces

VersaLogic has announced an EPIC-format SBC (single board computer) that includes SUMIT (Stackable Unified Modular Interconnect Technology) and PC/104 connectors. The “Komodo” supports the 2.27GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, offers up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, and has a MiniBlade socket for adding flash memory, the company says.
