Linux-ready IPTV stacks rev’d with new licensing

EzHomeTech has upgraded its Linux-ready “SSP” middleware and SSP-based SDKs (software development kit) for 1080p HD IPTVs (Internet protocol TVs) based on Sigma's MIPS-based processors. After announcing SSP 5.0 in May, EzHomeTech has released the updated SDKs over the summer, and has now announced new licensing. (more…)

WiFi digital camera runs Linux

Sony Electronics is shipping a digital still camera with WiFi for uploading files to photo-sharing services. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 offers 10-megapixel recording, a 4X optical zoom, DLNA compliance, 4GB of memory, and face- and scene-recognition software that runs on Linux. (more…)

ARM SoC launched with Linux support

Marvell is sampling a new ARM-based system-on-chip (SoC) family targeting consumer electronic devices. Based on its “Sheeva” core technology, which is said to combine Feroceon and XScale architectures, the PXA168 targets low-power devices that run Linux or Windows CE, and incorporate Internet connectivity, multimedia, and touchscreen interfaces, says Marvell. “Dr. Mobile” prescribes Nano for netbooks

Taiwanese manufacturer “Dr. Mobile” announced what appears to be the first netbook using Via's Nano processor. The FreeStyle 1300n offers an 11.6-inch screen, up to 4GB of RAM, a webcam, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a PCI Express Mini Card slot for optional broadband, the company says. (more…)

DLNA router technology runs Linux

At CES, fabless chip-maker Mindspeed Technologies will demonstrate a prototype of a consumer DLNA router that combines its Comcerto 100 broadband processor with Wind River's Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition. With its Athlon “Neo MV-40” CPU that resurrects the venerable K8 core, the solderable AMD Yukon chipset could prove interesting for low-cost rugged boards and devices running Linux, though no lifecycle guarantees have been announced.
