Sonos refreshes Linux audio gear

Sonos has chosen LinuxWorld in San Francisco this week as the place to unveil updated hardware and new Linux-based firmware. The vendor says its whole-house audio products are carried by 3,000 retailers in 55 countries, putting them among the most popular Linux-based consumer electronics products yet. (more…)

Linux to dominate MID market

Linux will outperform Windows Mobile and other rival operating systems (OSes) in the mobile Internet device (MID) market, says ABI Research. Led by Moblin, LiMo, and Maemo, the Linux MID market should hit 50 million shipments a year by 2013, says the research group. (more…)

PC/104-Plus SBC sports Atom

Eurotech announced a PC/104-Plus single board computer (SBC) with Intel's Z500-series Atom processors, and an optional 20-channel GPS receiver. Compatible with embedded Linux, the “Isis” includes SDIO and PCI Express Mini Card sockets, PC/104 and PC/104-Plus expansion, and eight USB ports, says Eurotech. (more…)

Netbooks growing — in two ways

Global shipments of “low-price mini notebooks” will reach 8.02 million units in 2008, according to a market research firm in Taipei, Taiwan. Market Intelligence Center (MIC) expects near-term volume growth of 128 percent annually, with shipments reaching 18.3 million units in 2009. (more…)

Nano smashes Atom, reviewers say

Via's new Nano processor outperforms Intel's Atom by about 20 percent, according to articles published this week by three hardware enthusiast websites. But, while both CPUs draw approximately the same power when idling, the Nano drinks a lot more juice when loaded, the reviewers added. (more…)

Linux MID stack to debut at IDF

[Updated Nov. 26] — Intel's Dirk Hohndel, director of Linux and open-source strategy, will formally announce Moblin 2.0 at the Intel Developer Forum, set for Aug. 19-21 in San Francisco.
