Linux device downloads BitTorrent video

A startup called Myka is accepting orders for a Linux-based device that downloads, stores, and plays BitTorrent media files on an attached TV. Myka's TorrentTV offloads BitTorrent peer-to-peer duties from a PC platform, easing the process of displaying “Torrents” on a TV. (more…)

Nokia tablet gains WiMAX

Nokia announced a WiMAX version of its Linux-based Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. Aside from the new WiMAX radio, the WiMAX Edition appears to offer identical hardware to the original N810, but offers a pre-installed version of Nokia's new Linux-based “Tablet OS2008” operating system (OS). (more…)

Intel announces first Atom chips

Linux kernel developers have tripled in number

The Linux Foundation (LF) has published a study on Linux mainline kernel development. According to LF, the number of Linux kernel developers has tripled since 2005, with many more companies contributing to the process (including, potentially, the latest new LF member, Adobe). (more…)

Camera-phone OCR stack supports Linux

Optical character recognition (OCR) vendor Abbyy USA has upgraded its mobile-device OCR software development kit (SDK) with support for East Asian languages. The Linux-compatible Mobile OCR SDK 2.5 adds Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) support, as well as improved image correction capabilities, says Abbyy. (more…)

Mini Linux notebook to gain WiMAX option

U.S.-based PC vendor Everex has announced plans to offer a WiMAX-enabled version of its mini-notebook. The “CloudBook Max” will feature a mobile WiMAX radio chip supplied by GCT Semiconductor, and will work with Sprint's high-speed XOHMwireless network, Everex said. (more…)

High-end FPGA comes with Linux

Xilinx is sampling what appears to be its most powerful FPGA (field-programmable gate array) yet. Designed for high-end communications applications such as wireless base-stations, the PowerPC 440-based Virtex-5 FXT FPGA is the fastest in the company's 65nm Virtex-5 line, with DSP performance of over 190 GMACs. CD-ROM sized board targets x86 storage servers

Via has announced a motherboard with an unusual 7.5 x 5.6 inch footprint, matching that of a standard optical disk drive. The NAS 7800 runs Linux on a 1.5GHz C7 processor, and targets storage devices with up to eight SATA drives. (more…)

Wireless survey counts 255 million wireless users

A December 2007 survey claims there are 255 million wireless users in the U.S., representing an increase of over 22 million from the year before. The study also said that in the last six months of 2007, wireless service revenues reached $71 billion. (more…)

Virtualization stack supports new Intel processor capabilities

VirtualLogix has updated the Intel Architecture (IA) version of its embedded virtualization stack, which targets performance-critical telecom and datacom applications. VLX for Network Infrastructure (VLX-NI) 3.0 adds support for Intel VT-d (virtualization technology for directed I/O), Microsoft Windows guests, and Core Microarchitecture 3.0, while adding new Eclipse-based set-up tools. Study predicts strong growth for mobile Linux

Linux represents 15 percent of the smartphone market, but that figure should grow considerably, says a market research report. The study, from Strategy Analytics, found that Motorola will continue to drive the growth for mobile Linux, along with Google. (more…)
