Multimedia processor gains Linux BSP

STMicroelectronics (ST) announced a Linux-based board support package (BSP) for an ARM9-based SoC (system-on-chip) with lots of integrated media processing and graphics engines. Trolltech's Qtopia application framework for Linux is also available for the STn8815 SoC, which targets smart phones, wireless PDAs, Internet appliances, and car entertainment systems. (more…)

Wind River claims CGL 4.0 compliance

Wind River says it is the first commercial vendor to meet the Linux Foundation's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 requirements. Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition 2.0 is said to have met all 135 priority-one mandatory requirements outlined by the specification. (more…)

Two Linux-based WiMax designs debut

Finnish wireless equipment integrator Elektrobit (EB) will showcase two new Linux-based, WiMax-connected product designs at GSMA in Barcelona next week. One is an Intel Menlow-based mobile internet device (MID) that uses virtualization to improve VoIP quality-of-service, while the other is a smaller handset that uses a NextWave WiMax chipset. GPS chip minimizes size, power consumption

NXP Semiconductors is now sampling a GPS chip claimed to be the industry's smallest and lowest-powered. The GNS7560 requires only four external connections, offers Linux drivers, and uniquely, saves power by altering sensitivity and tracking based on signal strength, multipath, and velocity, according to the company. Linux-based open handset platform on schedule

The LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation announced that its open handset platform is on schedule for release in March. The R1 release of LiMo Linux-based mobile platform will include public availability of the application programming interface (API) specifications, says the organization, enabling software vendors to port applications to the GTK-based stack.
