Free 64-bit single-core OpenSPARC processor core emerges

A team of former STMicroelectronics engineers in Italy and Britain has created a single-core version of Sun's 8-way, 64-bit, GPL-licensed OpenSPARC T1 processor core. Simply RISC's free, open “S1” core can run Ubuntu Linux, and targets embedded devices such as PDAs, set-top boxes, and digital cameras, the company says. (more…)

OpenVG library does 2D vector graphics with 3D hardware

Italian start-up Mazatech is offering the second technology preview of its commercial library for hardware-accelerated 2D vector graphics on small-screen embedded devices. Samsung merges NAND flash, MMC controller

Flash chipmaker Samsung Electronics is sampling a chip that combines up to 4 gigabytes of NAND flash with a multimedia card (MMC) controller. MoviNAND presents the system with a high-speed MMC serial interface, resulting in the “fastest mobile data processing possible,” at up to 52 MB/sec, according to Samsung. (more…)

Wind River boasts of embedded Linux dominance

FreeDOS finally attains v1.0 release

An open source project maintaining a free DOS-compatible operating system commonly used in embedded devices such as cash registers has achieved its first-ever major release. FreeDOS 1.0 features improved file, memory, and CD-ROM subsystems, and now provides a “stable and viable MS-DOS replacement,” according to a project spokesperson. (more…)
