Compact embedded computers run Linux on Pentium

Acrosser has added three new models to its line of compact, low-power, industrial computers. The AR-ES0831 series supports Linux, and is aimed at space-constrained applications such as kiosks, environmental monitoring, and medical instruments, according to the company. (more…)

Trolltech woos developers with “open” Linux phone

Trolltech, best known for development tools and Linux application stacks for phones and other mobile devices, will ship an “open” Linux-based phone in September. The “Greenphone” features a user-modifiable Linux OS, and is meant to jumpstart a third-party native application ecosystem for Linux-based mobile phones. (more…)

PalmOS ecosystem welcomes mobile Linux developers

Access/PalmSource is inviting developers interested in targeting its Linux-based mobile phone stack to join a new “Access Developer Network” (ADN) online community. Currently, new ADN registrants are redirected to the company's pre-existing PalmOS Developer Pavillion, which, with 420,000 registrants, is probably the largest mobile application ecosystem in the world. Linux cellphone stack approved by #2 Euro carrier

Access/PalmSource announced on Aug. 14 that the Access Linux Platform (ALP) has been approved for use across the network of Europe's second-largest mobile phone operator, Orange Telecom. Additionally, the companies will collaborate on an “Orange Application Package” for ALP-based mobile phones. (more…)

Linux phone industry groups align

Two industry groups devoted to improving and promoting Linux as a mobile phone platform have announced a formal agreement to cooperate. The Mobile Linux Initiative (MLI) and the Linux Phone Standards Forum (LiPS) say their collaboration will “further accelerate the growth and proliferation of mobile Linux phones and devices worldwide.” (more…)

Access frees database filesystem for Linux devices

Access/PalmSource has released an SQL-based filesystem for embedded devices under the LGPL (Lesser General Public License). Libsqlfs implements a POSIX-style hierarchical filesystem as an SQLite database file, and was originally developed to provide a registry of system and application configuration data for mobile phones, according to Access. Advantech's eAutomation group has added a new model to its UNO line of fanless industrial computers. The 1U-high UNO-2668 boasts eight isolated serial ports along with three LAN ports, and supports Linux and other embedded OSes, according to the company. (more…)

S. Calif. Linux conference seeks embedded speakers

Three Los Angeles-area Linux user groups are soliciting embedded Linux speakers for their fifth annual conference and expo. SCALE 5x (Southern California Linux Expo) is set for Feb. 11-12, at the Westin Hotel near LAX. It is organized by the USC, Simi/Conejo, and UCLA Linux user groups (LUGs). (more…)

Linux-based device server sprouts USB interface

SSV is shipping a version of its Linux-based industrial device server with a USB interface. The IGW/920 (Industrial Gateway 920) comes with Linux 2.6 preinstalled, and can be used to remotely control or monitor devices with serial or USB interfaces, SSV says. (more…)

Linux signage vendor acquired by new media company

“New media” advertising specialist HumWare Media Corp. has agreed to acquire Audio Video Interactive (AVI), a vendor of Linux-based digital signage devices said to be used by clients that include Best Buy, Nike, Radio Shack, Samsung, and Verizon. (more…)

Linux-powered SBCs target video-over-IP apps

Applied Data Systems (ADS) is sampling a pair of single-board computers (SBCs) aimed at embedded video-over-IP (VIP) applications. The NetCast Streamer can digitize and stream A/V signals at DVD quality, while the NetCast Player can decode streams for NTSC or PAL playback. (more…)
