Korean handheld vendor Gamepark has announced a new portable media player and gaming device based on embedded Linux. The GPX2-F100 features dual ARM9 processors, USB 2.0, a 3.5-inch color LCD, media playback software, and support for both native and emulated games. The worldwide market for non-converged handheld devices (PDAs) declined for the sixth consecutive quarter in Q2 of 2005, IDC reports. Vendors offering GPS-enabled PDAs fared best. Overall, shipments were 1.7 million units, a fall of 24.9 percent from the prior quarter, and a shrinkage of 20.8 percent from Q2 2004. (more…)

Symbian dominates the market for “converged mobile device operating systems,” and will gain marketshare through 2009, according to a report released today by IDC. Windows and Linux will also grow, reaching about 17 percent marketshares by 2009, IDC says. (more…)
