Device Profile: Gamepark GPX2-F100

Korean handheld vendor Gamepark has announced a new portable media player and gaming device based on embedded Linux. The GPX2-F100 features dual ARM9 processors, USB 2.0, a 3.5-inch color LCD, media playback software, and support for both native and emulated games. A Linux SDK (software development kit) will be available when the device ships, Gamepark says. (more…)

PDA market decline persists, GPS a bright spot

The worldwide market for non-converged handheld devices (PDAs) declined for the sixth consecutive quarter in Q2 of 2005, IDC reports. Vendors offering GPS-enabled PDAs fared best. Overall, shipments were 1.7 million units, a fall of 24.9 percent from the prior quarter, and a shrinkage of 20.8 percent from Q2 2004. (more…)

Software turns mobile phones into walkie-talkies

Esmertec is shipping software that adds real-time push-to-talk functionality to 2.5G and 3G mobile phones. The [email protected] (Push-to-talk over Cellular) client allows users to establish one-on-one or one-to-many (group) conversations, and can be ported to any platform with a C compiler, the company says. Linux trails Windows, Symbian in converged mobile devices

Symbian dominates the market for “converged mobile device operating systems,” and will gain marketshare through 2009, according to a report released today by IDC. Windows and Linux will also grow, reaching about 17 percent marketshares by 2009, IDC says. (more…)

A company specializing in custom Linux distributions for device vendors and others has partnered with a vendor of off-the-shelf and custom appliance hardware. Progeny says NCS Technology can provide its customers with high-quality hardware, while Progeny can create and maintain custom Linux distributions for NCS's customers. (more…)

France equips footsoldiers with Linux, PowerPC, real-time Java

Aonix says its real-time Java virtual machine (JVM) will be used in a PowerPC/Linux-based armament system being developed for French footsoldiers. The PERC JVM provides a run-time environment for Java applications requiring high reliability and determinism, and will be used in France's FELEN project, Aonix says. (more…)

Tool creates SVG animations for Linux devices

Ikivo AB has updated its mobile content authoring software for scalable vector graphics (SVG). Animator 1.1 includes opacity and gradient support, and extensive preview profiles, and can be used to develop content and user interfaces for mobile Linux devices, the company says. (more…)

Motorola spawns Linux phone triplets, partners with Yahoo!

[Updated 1PM] — Motorola has announced three Linux/Java phones, which it says “further [demonstrate] Motorola's commitment to driving Linux-for-mobile innovation across the company's device spectrum.” The A728, A732, and A910 target mobile professionals.
