PowerPC Linux dev kit showcases tools

AMCC is shipping a Linux development kit for its 440EP processor for imaging and industrial applications. The kit includes a “Yosemite” board from Embedded Planet, along with tools, sample applications, benchmarks, hardware design files, and evaluation versions of embedded tools from LynuxWorks, Denx, and Embedded Toolsmiths. Security processors target WiMAX base stations, CPE

Cavium has announced that its Linux-friendly line of security processors is available with microcode and SDKs supporting WiMAX access point and CPE (customer premises equipment) development. Additionally, the company says Nex-G used its Nitrox II security processor in a sixteen-sector WiMAX base station. (more…)

Motorola readies tri-band Linux/Java phone

[Updated 12:30PM] — Motorola will ship another Linux/Java phone in Q4 2005. The E895 is a tri-band GSM cameraphone with a 1.3 megapixel camera, large TFT/LCD display, Bluetooth, and rich Internet, multimedia, and web capabilities, Motorola says. Open source telephony app server evolves

An open source telephony application server project has released its second major version to developers. Bayonne 2 features a simpler driver model, support for wired and protocol-stack-based drivers, and both an interface library and voice application server. Cell Linux port heads for mainstream kernel tree

[Updated Jun. 29, 2005] — IBM, Sony, and Toshiba have ported Linux to the Cell processor, and hope to merge their patches into the next major Linux kernel release, 2.6.13. The port includes a 64-bit PowerPC kernel, and a filesystem availing it of the chip's multiple independent vector processing units. (more…)

PXA2xx PCI, HDD controllers gain embedded Linux support

QuickLogic has announced that its programmable PCI bridge and hard drive controller for Intel's XScale PXA2xx (Bulverde) processors are supported by Viosoft's embedded Linux Development tools. Arriba Embedded Linux Edition for the QuickLogic Mobile Applications Platform can be used to develop drivers, loadable modules, and user-mode applications. (more…)

Linux-friendly dev board available for 64-bit MIPS SoC

Toshiba America Electronic Components is shipping a reference board for its newest 64-bit MIPS/RISC chip. The RBTX4939 includes a TX4939XBG-400 processor module available for use in embedded designs. Toshiba is developing a Linux BSP (board support package), with BSPs also expected from MontaVista and Wind River. (more…)

Sun Microsystems, Via Technologies, and iGoLogic Inc. will debut an x86-based development kit for embedded applications based on Sun's Java 2, Standard Edition (J2SE), next week at Java One. Linux distributor ships security appliances

Astaro has embedded its own Linux distribution for enterprise firewalls and VPN routers into a line of Linux-powered firewall appliances. The Astaro Security Gateway family includes three models that support between 80 and 420 Mbps of firewalling throughput, and 26 to 270 Mbps of VPN throughput. (more…)
