News: Juggling with light — using real-time Linux in molecular physiology

Researchers at the University of Vermont used a real-time Linux operating system to control a “laser trap” that manipulates individual molecules with a computer-controlled laser beam. The project illustrates how RTLinux, a real-time Linux operating system from FSMLabs, separates time-critical and non-time-critical tasks. (more…)

Sony beefs up FAT for consumer devices

Sony has created a version of the vFAT filesystem that it says works better in consumer electronic devices with removable USB mass storage devices. Unlike vFAT, the xvFAT filesystem will not induce a kernel panic if a USB storage device is removed during a write operation, Sony says. (more…)

Platform simulation tool ups runtime speed, adds embedded support

Open source groupware gains SyncML mobile data syncing

Software license management company gains $12M funding

Black Duck Software has secured $12M in a Series-B funding round led by Fidelity Ventures. The round includes Intel Capital and SAP Ventures, along with previous investors Flagship Ventures, General Catalyst Partners, and Red Hat. Embedded Linux brings high-quality conferencing to VoIP phone

Snom is shipping a Linux-based VoIP (voice-over-IP) business phone said to offer high-quality conferencing, thanks to on-phone bridging and a full-duplex speakerphone. Red Hat creates Fedora Foundation

Red Hat will create an independent foundation to oversee the open source Linux distribution it adopted last fall to replace its erstwhile free Linux distribution, eWEEK reports. Ten Art-ni Corporation will resell and support Black Duck's ProtexIP/development offering, and the companies will work together on joint sales and marketing initiatives in the region, they say. Wind River is offering its Carrier Grade Linux OS, tools, and middleware for an ATCA telecom blade computer from Artesyn Communication Products. Wind River's Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition now supports Artesyn's KatanaQp, a dual-PowerPC system targeting control plane and packet processing network infrastructure equipment. SDK available for Linux-based portable media player

Archos is offering an SDK for its Linux-based “pocket media assistant.” The toolkit can be used to create non-commercial applications for the PMA400, and is available for a fee for commercial use.
