Fujitsu Microelectronics America (FMA) is shipping an SoC (system-on-chip) targeting WiMAX broadband wireless access (BWA) equipment for metropolitan area networks (MANs). The MB87M3400 targets base stations and subscriber access equipment, and can be used in equipment carrying up to 75Mbps of data, Fujitsu claims. (more…)

eCosCentric has donated a generic I2C bus implementation to the open source eCos operating system for deeply embedded systems. A group of KDE developers is closing in on a PIM (personal information manager) suite that can run on Qtopia PDAs/smartphones as well as Linux, Windows, and Mac desktops. Chinese semiconductor vendor BLX IC is shipping a faster successor to its Godson-1 processor, according to the EETimes UK. The 300-500MHz Godson-2 has a 64-bit MIPS-like architecture, and can run office applications under Linux with performance similar to a Pentium-III, the company says. (more…)

Parvus has released four new PC/104 form-factor embedded processor modules based on Intel's new ULV Celeron Tualatin processor and 815E chipset. AMD has started shipping dual-core models of its 64-bit Opteron processor for four- and eight-way servers, and will offer dual-core chips for desktop and desktop-replacement notebook users as well. The dual-core Opteron and Athlon64 chips can be used to upgrade 90nm-ready systems with only a BIOS change, the company says. (more…)
