Qseven module has AMD power, up to 32GB of onboard flash

Hectronic announced a Qseven module that comes with single- or dual-core AMD G-Series processors clocked at 1.0GHz. The H6059 features up to 4GB of RAM and 32GB of SSD (solid state disk) storage, supports dual displays, includes multiple interfaces, and supports legacy I/O via the LPC bus, the company says.

Parrot unveils new auto systems, updates quadricopter with Android support

Parrot announced three new versions of its Android-based Asteroid in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) platform: a 3.2-inch Asteroid CK Bluetooth hands-free system, a five-inch Asteroid Nav navigation system, and the Asteroid 2DIN multimedia car radio. Parrot also announced a revised 2.0 version of its Linux-based Parrot AR Drone “quadricopter” flying drone that can now be flown with an Android phone.

SODIMM-sized module is just $49

Strategic Test announced a SODIMM-sized computer-on-module (COM) based on Freescale's ARM 9-based i.MX283 system-on-chip. Clocked at 454MHz, the 2.66 x 1.0-inch TX-28S offers extensive I/O, including Ethernet and dual USB 2.0 ports, plus an available “Strategic Development Kit 5” baseboard, says the company.

‘Medfield’ Atom breaks cover — will be in Lenovo and Motorola phones

Intel and Motorola announced a multi-year agreement focused on the development of Atom-powered, Android-based phones and tablets. Meanwhile, Intel showed off an smartphone reference platform and a Lenovo K800 handset that both run Android on the “Medfield” processor — now unveiled as the Atom Z2460 — and third-party benchmarks rated the CPU high marks in performance and power consumption.

Plug Computer takes on education with Marvell SMILE Plug micro server

Marvell announced an education platform combining its Plug Computer, Arch Linux, and software developed in collaboration with Stanford University. The SMILE Plug micro server runs on a 2GHz Marvell Armada 300 processor, sets up a secure Wi-Fi cloud for up to 60 students, and provides a “Classroom 3.0” connected, secure, interactive learning environment.

Intel’s educational PC gets dual cores, 12-hour battery

Intel announced the fifth generation of its reference platform for education-focused portable PCs. The Classmate now features a dual-core Atom N2600 processor, delivering battery life of up to 12 hours, plus optional capacitive multitouch functionality, according to the company.

Android 4.0 tablet sells for $170

At CES, ViewSonic announced a seven-inch ViewPad E70 tablet that runs Android 4.0 on a 1GHz processor and costs a mere $170. The company also unveiled a 9.7-inch ViewPad 10e tablet for $270, a 10.1-inch, dual-boot Windows/Android model (the $849 ViewPad 10pi), and a 3.5-inch ViewPhone 3 (Latin America-bound with Android 2.3).

ATandT, Verizon, Sprint unleash 4G LTE Android phones, tablets

AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint announced a bevy of Android smartphones — and a few tablets — on the first day of this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Highlights include the Sony Xperia Ion phone at AT&T, the Motorola Droid 4 and Razr Maxx on Verizon, and Sprint's first LTE phones: the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper.

New IP will make mobile and embedded graphics 20 times faster

Imagination Technologies — a key supplier of graphics processing unit (GPU) cores to most ARM licensees as well as to Intel — says its new Powervr Series 6 version will boost performance by a factor of at least 20. The “Rogue” architecture is initially licensable in G6200 and G6400 versions, which respectively feature two and four compute clusters, according to the company.

Google TV powers Sony, Vizio Blu-ray players, media streamers

Several companies have announced Blu-ray players and media streaming boxes for Google's Android-based Google TV TV platform. Sony has its NSZ-GS7 Network Media Player and NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray disc player, Vizio tipped its VBR430 3D Blu-ray player and VAP430 Stream Player — as well as several Google TV-enabled R Series HDTVs — and E Fun will provide its Nextbox set-top.

Unity-based Ubuntu TV takes on Google TV

Canonical used the Consumer Electronics Show to demonstrate an IPTV platform — Ubuntu TV — that will directly compete with Google TV. Based on Ubuntu Core, the upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 (“Precise Pangolins”), the Unity UI layer, and the Ubuntu One cloud service, the offering aims to meld cable/satellite TV service with Internet content, featuring unified search, channel guide, time shifting, optimized apps, and links to mobile devices.

Asus spins more Tegra 3 tablets, starting at just $249

Not content with shipping the world first quad-core Android tablet, Asus is now showing two more Nvidia Tegra 3 models at this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). They're the seven-inch Eee Pad MeMo ME370T — which will reportedly sell for just $250 — and the Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF700T, with enhanced wireless performance and a 10.1-inch display that packs an impressive 1920 x 1200 pixels.

Freescale’s Cortex-A9 SoCs include E Ink controllers

Freescale Semiconductor announced versions of its ARM Cortex-A9-based i.MX 6 chips that are equipped with E Ink EPD controllers, making the processors suitable for driving e-readers and low-cost tablets. The single-core, 1GHz i.MX 6SoloLite exclusively targets e-readers, while the dual-core, 1GHz i.MX 6DualLite is designed for a broader array of devices, including “media tablets.”

OLPC’s XO 3 tablet uses 1GHz ARM SoC to run Sugar Linux or Android

One Laptop per Child (OLPC) demonstrated a “fully functional” version of its long-delayed XO 3.0 tablet, equipped with a 1GHz Marvell Armada PXA618 processor running Sugar Linux or Android 3.x. Like OLPC's XO 2 laptop, the eight-inch tablet is aimed at educational systems in developing nations, and it will feature an optional sunlight-readable Pixel Qi touchscreen plus the ability to draw power from an optional solar panel or crank charger.

HDMI dongle IPTV device supports Android 4.0

Always Innovating announced a tiny open source, IP set-top box (STB) that runs Android 4.0 on a Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor clocked as high as 1.8GHz. The HDMI Dongle plugs directly into a TV's HDMI port, and provides up to 1GB of RAM, a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a remote control that offers NFC, accelerometers, and voice control.
