Lineo and Wipro form strategic alliance

Bangalore, India & Santa Clara, CA — (press release excerpt) — Wipro Limited and Lineo Inc. have announced a worldwide strategic partnership to achieve a common goal of jointly addressing business opportunities based on Linux technology. The alliance is Wipro's first global strategic partnership to cover the specific embedded space, and the first strategic alliance being entered by Lineo with a… software services provider.

The partnership provides Wipro with Embedix, a stable and commercially supported embedded Linux platform, which it can use for services to its engineering customers. It also provides Wipro with a platform for building its IP and solutions for embedded systems. Wipro will use Lineo's sales and marketing channels to promote its Technology IP, solutions and service offerings.

Wipro is amongst the leading engineering service providers in the embedded space, and sees Embedded Linux as one of the dominant technologies for embedded devices in the near future. Wipro already has a number of projects underway to develop solutions based on embedded Linux for its worldwide customers, and this alliance will increase Wipros' focus within the embedded space on residential gateway communications, Digital and Interactive TV, and smart handheld device vertical markets

As part of this partnership, Lineo will be able to license Wipro's technology IP and leverage their expertise in engineering services for its own product development. Lineo will also have the opportunity to leverage Wipro's engineering services arm to provide professional services, system integration and engineering services to Lineo's customers. Lineo work with Wipro to jointly develop solutions for vertical markets.

To achieve the results envisaged in this partnership, Wipro and Lineo will develop a joint-marketing and joint-sales strategy.
