OMAP-ready 720p camera module offers low-light sensitivity

E-Con Systems announced a one megapixel “wide dynamic range” camera module that supports 720p video at 30 frames per second. Available in an evaluation kit designed to plug into Texas Instruments' Cortex-A8-based OMAP3530 EVM, the e-CAM1M_CU10630_MOD is equipped with an S-mount lens holder, and offers an OmniVision OV10630 sensor, offering provide excellent low light sensitivity, says the company.

The e-CAM1M_CU10630_MOD is well suited to surveillance devices, IP cameras, and automotive lane departure warning applications, says E-Con Systems. It's designed to connect to the Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP35x EVM board, as were two of the company's previous e-CAM modules, the e-CAM32_OMAP35x (3.2 megapixel) and e-CAM50_OMAP35x (5.0 megapixel). 

Earlier this week, the company announced the eCAM50_DM37x, intended for TI's DM3730 EVM board. Like the e-CAM50_OMAP35x mentioned above, that module used the OmniVision OV5642 CMOS image sensor, the new e-CAM1M_CU10630_MOD (below) adopts the OV10630 sensor, providing it with a dynamic range of 100dB.

The camera module features a 4.2-micron pixel size based on OmniVision's OmniPixel3-HS architecture, resulting in "very good low light sensitivity," says E-Con. The module can stream 720p video at 30 frames per second, says the company.

Module with S-mount holder

The e-CAM1M_CU10630_MOD also offers an 8-bit parallel video port with Sync signals, says E-Con. Available with a S-mount lens holder (above), the module is said to be compatible with any standard S-mount M12P0.5 lens.

The module is said to be compatible with TI's OMAP35x, DaVinci DM37x, DaVinci DM3xx, and Sitara processors, as well as Freescale i.MX, Marvell XScale, and "Samsung etc." platforms. The module is available in an evaluation kit designed to work with TI's OMAP3530 EVM board, which is equipped with a 720MHz OMAP3530 processor. This well-travelled system-on-chip features an ARM Cortex-A8 processor along with video and OpenGL 2D/3D graphics accelerators.

The e-CAM1M_CU10630_MOD evaluation kit contains the camera module, lens, and a daughter card designed to connect to TI's EVM board. Windows CE 6.0 drivers are said to be available at launch, followed by Android and Linux support.
