Secure embedded Web server gains PHP support

Mar 30, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Mbedthis Software has added support for the PHP scripting language to its high-security HTTP server for embedded devices. AppWeb 1.1 implements PHP support as a loadable module, and is currently available as a development release. Mbedthis offers AppWeb under GNU and commercial licenses, along with support and security enhancement services.

Mbedthis was founded by Michael O'Brien, author of GoAhead, probably the world's most popular Web browser for embedded use. O'Brien is also lead architect of AppWeb.

AppWeb is intended to meet embedded needs for size, performance, and security in a server that still shares a configuration syntax and many popular features with Apache. PHP has long been the most popular Apache module, according to Security Space, making it a natural target for inclusion in AppWeb.

Mbedthis earlier added support to AppWeb for PeerSec Networks MatrixSSL, a small SSL library optimized for embedded systems and released under the GPL.

O'Brien says Mbedthis has optimized the integration of PHP with AppWeb with maximum performance in mind. “AppWeb uses a modular multi-threaded core to deliver a highly secure HTTP server that excels in terms of performance, functionality, and memory footprint. Embedded developers can selectively configure enabled features for a memory footprint as low as 110K RAM. With PHP and SSL enabled, a complete server can run in under 2MB. This makes it ideal for mobile and offline applications. It can also be used for many embedded applications that require management, web services, and web based user interfaces,” said O'Brien.

“PHP and LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) have has attracted quite a following in the Enterprise web application market,” O'Brien adds. “This module now allows embedded users to leverage the PHP technology in their devices and applications and extends the reach of LAMP into the growing embedded market.”

AppWeb 1.1 is available now for download from Mbedthis.
