The Embedded Linux Consortium's board of directors has started the clock on final review of version 1.0 of the ELC Platform Specification, according to an announcement sent to the ELC's members. The draft spec was completed by the platform spec working group in late October, triggering a 45-day review period that will… culminate in a vote cycle authorizing public distribution of the world's first Embedded Linux standard.

“If all goes as planned, an API-centric standard (V1.0) for the construction of embedded Linux platforms will be in public hands before year's end,” said Shohat.

The international group is employing an API-centric approach to standardization of a Linux computing platform specifically for embedded applications. The core platform will initially cover basic OS services that must be supported in any compliant embedded Linux system. WG members include: Mark Brown, IBM; Mitch Bunnell, LynuxWorks, Kevin Dankwardt, K-Computing; Joe DeBlaquiere, Red Hat Software; Thiru Govindan, WiPRO; Bao Ha, Independent; Lee Courtney, MontaVista Software; Dong-Jun Shin, Samsung Electronics; Victor Yodaiken, FSM Labs and I.P. Park, Panasonic Technologies.

“This is what the Board promised early this year,” continued Shohat. “Thanks to the Herculean efforts of the Working Group chaired by Mark Brown (IBM) and Mitch Bunnell (LynuxWorks), we are nearly there!”

Remaining steps include establishing a policy for test and conformance, and actually creating the test suites. The ELC also plans to offer guidance to ELC members on how to position their conformance-destined products in the interim.

“I would like to hear from any individual or member company who wishes to support these new steps via volunteerism,” Shohat added. “Our existing Board has authorized the ongoing service of the Core WG and the formation of volunteer-based WGs on Policy and Test Suites.
