The miniRTL project is developing a minimum sized real-time Linux small enough to boot from a single floppy (or small Flash memory device) into a ramdisk, yet with the most important features of Linux. miniRTL is intended to be useful as the basis for embedded systems, but also provides a means for real-time “newbies” to learn more about real-time Linux. Tiny-X, a small footprint X Window server implementation for embedded systems, is now available as part of XFree86 4.0. It was developed by Keith Packard of the XFree86 Core Team, sponsored by SuSE, Inc. The goal was to create something that would work well in a small memory footprint and, importantly, be robust in near out-of-memory situations. (more…)
