Integrated Linux and CPM microcode for PowerQUICC

Embedded Linux solutions provider Arabella Software has contracted with Motorola to develop customized communications processor module (CPM) microcode for the Motorola PowerQUICC II and PowerQUICC III communications processors. Arabella says the microcode packages will off-load critical functions from the PowerPC CPU-based software, enhancing system throughput. (more…)

More evidence Samsung will ship Linux-based smartphone in 2003

Major release expands RTLinux horizons

FSMLabs has issued a major release to its RTCore hard real-time OS and RTLinuxPro development kit, adding ease-of-use features it hopes will bring its technology to a broader range of customers. Also new are support for BSD kernels, upgrades to real-time networking, and overall performance and reliability enhancements, the company says. (more…)

Transmeta “Efficeon” CPU details coming soon

MiniGUI — a technical introduction

MiniGUI is a four-year-old open source GUI framework for Linux devices — especially those running real-time applications — that is now a stable, viable alternative to QT/Embedded and Microwindows, according to founder and maintainer Wei Yongming. MontaVista saves 2.6 for ’04

MontaVista Director of Strategic Marketing Bill Weinberg says his company will wait for a stable 2.6 kernel from Linus Torvalds before releasing its first 2.6-based distribution, but that MontaVista's current offerings include “the same thing” as parts of 2.6, according to an article in the SD Times. TTS engine supports Linux devices on ARM/XScale

Fonix Corp. has released version 5.0 of its Fonix DECtalk text-to-speech (TTS) software technology. According to Fonix, DECtalk offers the smallest memory footprint for a full-featured, multilanguage, full-dictionary TTS engine and is ideal for embedded applications. Fonix says Version 5 supports Linux devices implemented on a range of hardware platforms including ARM 9 and XScale. (more…)

Bluetooth, Wi-fi expected on 25 million vehicles within 5 years

Adoption of Bluetooth has been steadily increasing since its OEM automotive debut in the 2003 Saab 9-3. Although Bluetooth will continue its momentum in new 2004 models from Acura, Audi, Lexus, Lincoln, Maybach, and Toyota, to name a few, its role will be limited, according to the findings of a new research study from ABI.
