uClinux release supports all Apple iPods, includes GUI

A new release from the “Linux on iPod” project supports first, second, and third-generation iPods (but not mini-iPods). The new release includes Podzilla, “a basic GUI demo similar to the native Apple firmware.” iPod Linux installs alongside the native firmware, providing a boot-time choice. (more…)

In memory database vendor promotes “self-diagnostic” software APIs

Commercial software application programming interfaces (APIs) are a major source of costly bugs, according to author Steve Graves, CEO of McObjects. Linux-oriented companies make list of fast growing small businesses

Neoware, which builds thin-client devices based on Linux and other embedded operating systems, was the third-fastest growing small business over the last three years, according to Reed Business Research and Electronic Business magazine. New high-performance synthesizable 32-bit cores support Linux

MIPS Technologies is shipping four new 32-bit synthesizable processor cores that support embedded Linux. The new “24K” cores, expected to appear in customer-implemented silicon before 2005, target high-volume applications such as broadband access, wireless, networking, digital television, and office automation. Independent analysis finds near-equality of AMD, Intel 64-bit x86’s

An independent analysis by In-Stat/MDR's Microprocessor Report indicates that the 64-bit x86 architectures from AMD and Intel are almost, but not quite, identical. Near-100% software compatibility is possible, but in some cases, programs written for one 64-bit architecture may not run properly on the other 64-bit architecture, according to the report. (more…)

Unwiring chips with optical interface technology

While still some years from viability in a production environment, optical chip-to-chip interconnect technology was recently demonstrated by a team from the Intel Components Research Lab in a fully functioning prototype device that attained an aggregate bandwidth of more than 8 giga-transfers per second. Linux creates first ad-hoc, temporary supercomputer
