SH RISC/DSP SoC does VoIP

Renesas has introduced a new SuperH embedded processor that supports Linux and is optimized for VoIP (voice over IP) applications. The SH7710 dual-core RISC/DSP chip can process VoIP with enough overhead to simultaneously run a firewall and security algorithms, according to Renesas. (more…)

RTEMS dev kits offered for tiny SBCs

Digital Home Network Alliance releases guidelines, changes name

The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA, formerly the Digital Home Working Group), has released its Home Networked Device Interoperability Guidelines v1.0. The Guidelines define design principles needed to move content between consumer electronics devices, personal computers, and mobile devices on wired or wireless home networks. (more…)

Low volume devices gain embedded Flash player

Embedded Linux device makers wishing to license Macromedia's Flash player for use in low-volume devices can now do so, thanks to an agreement between Macromedia and embedded engineering services provider Vibren Technologies. The deal authorizes Vibren to resell Flash licenses in quantities as low as 1,000, the company says. (more…)

Opie goes to LinuxTag

Representatives of the Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (Opie) project will attend the Linuxtag Fair, which starts today in Karlsruhe, Germany. Opie is a free graphical framework and application stack for PDAs, handhelds, and Webpads. Opie representatives call Linuxtag “the world's biggest conference for Linux-based business and open source solutions.”

Samsung aims new NAND Flash filesystem at Linux-based gadgets

Samsung is offering a new wear-leveling filesystem for NAND Flash storage devices that it claims offers better performance under Linux than existing alternatives. “Robust File System,” or RFS, targets mobile phones and other embedded devices running embedded Linux. (more…)
