Embedded Linux vet to stump for Jaluna at ESC

Embedded Linux industry veteran David Beal will speak at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston next week. In his new role as “manager of product management” with Jaluna, Beal will join Jaluna's senior field application engineer, Glen Call, in a presentation about Jaluna's virtual infrastructure software platform. RISC/DSP SoC line runs Linux, targets digital video

Texas Instruments (TI) will sample chips from a new line targeting digital video applications before year's end. The DaVinci SoCs will feature ARM application processor cores alongside TI's newest C64x+ DSP cores, and will be supported initially under Linux, with other OSes to follow. (more…)

PalmSource acquired by mobile browser specialist

Mobile browser-maker Access Co. Ltd. announced Friday that it will acquire Palm OS developer PalmSource Inc. in an all-cash transaction for approximately $324 million. The acquisition adds operating system platform expertise and Linux development resources to Access's existing mobile device-oriented “content delivery and Internet access software,” the companies said. Device Profile: Sony XCI-SX1 camera module

Sony's XCI-SX1 is the first model in a line of rugged, Linux-based camera modules targeting the emerging “machine vision” product category. The black-and-white camera runs MontaVista Linux on an AMD Geode processor, and provides “the imager, intelligence, and interface” on a single plug-in module, Sony says. (more…)

GPL revision project gets underway

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has launched a project to rewrite the GNU General Public License (GPL), a license used by a third of open source software projects. The “GPL Version 3 Development and Publicity Project” will release a draft version in early 2006, followed by a final version in early 2007, according to eWEEK.com. (more…)

Rapid design tool creates XML HMIs for Linux targets

Altia, Inc. has added XML export and import capabilities to its graphical design tool for Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This new capability in Altia Design lets application designers create data-driven GUIs for Linux devices without coding or compiling, according to the company. (more…)

uClinux-based Ethernet server gains CAN driver, tools

Adobe ships embedded Linux version of PostScript 3

Adobe Systems has revised its flagship page description language. Postscript 3 adds direct printing of PDFs, including AES-encrypted PDFs, and is the first Postscript release to feature separate editions for commercial printing systems such as digital color presses, and small-footprint embedded devices such as workgroup printers. Open source telephony server adds PSTN-to-VoIP bindings

A project to create an open source telephony application server has achieved a second release of its development branch. Bayonne 2 release two adds a binding for basic VoIP-to-PSTN (voice-over-IP to public switched telephone network) services, a feature aimed at illustrating the software's new services binding plugin model. MIPS hardens 32-bit RISC cores, lowers costs

MIPS Technologies is shipping “hard” versions of two processor cores it says have achieved rapid adoption over the past year as synthesizable, “soft” cores. The 24Kc and 4KEc hard cores target system OEMs, fabless semiconductor companies, and startups, and offer lower costs and risks than synthesizable IP cores, MIPS says. (more…)

ARM API aids secure application development

ARM Ltd. has released a free API (application programming interface) to security extensions available for the ARM instruction set. The TrustZone Software API targets embedded device developers wishing to create secure, interoperable applications that work across multiple device categories, including mobile phones, portable media players, set-top boxes, and home gateways. Device UI toolkit gains low-level graphics API

Opera Software has added a low-level graphics API to its user interface (UI) development toolkit for home media device developers. The addition of GOGI (generic Opera graphical interface) allows Opera's Home Media SDK to build interfaces for devices that lack Qt, X, or other relevant graphical libraries, the company says. Open Group pilots embedded real-time POSIX conformance testing

The Open Group has invited interested organizations to pilot a certification program for one of the IEEE's embedded real-time POSIX standards. TCL Mobile Communications (TMC) has used embedded Linux to build a high-end dual-band GSM/GPRS smartphone. The e787 features a 2MP camera, Bluetooth, multimedia players, an Internet phonebook feature, PC synchronization, and a document viewer from Picsel Technologies. (more…)
