Access frees database filesystem for Linux devices

Access/PalmSource has released an SQL-based filesystem for embedded devices under the LGPL (Lesser General Public License). Libsqlfs implements a POSIX-style hierarchical filesystem as an SQLite database file, and was originally developed to provide a registry of system and application configuration data for mobile phones, according to Access. Industrial computer sports 8 serial, 3 LAN ports

Advantech's eAutomation group has added a new model to its UNO line of fanless industrial computers. The 1U-high UNO-2668 boasts eight isolated serial ports along with three LAN ports, and supports Linux and other embedded OSes, according to the company. (more…)

S. Calif. Linux conference seeks embedded speakers

Three Los Angeles-area Linux user groups are soliciting embedded Linux speakers for their fifth annual conference and expo. SCALE 5x (Southern California Linux Expo) is set for Feb. 11-12, at the Westin Hotel near LAX. It is organized by the USC, Simi/Conejo, and UCLA Linux user groups (LUGs). (more…)

Linux-based device server sprouts USB interface

SSV is shipping a version of its Linux-based industrial device server with a USB interface. The IGW/920 (Industrial Gateway 920) comes with Linux 2.6 preinstalled, and can be used to remotely control or monitor devices with serial or USB interfaces, SSV says. (more…)

Linux signage vendor acquired by new media company

“New media” advertising specialist HumWare Media Corp. has agreed to acquire Audio Video Interactive (AVI), a vendor of Linux-based digital signage devices said to be used by clients that include Best Buy, Nike, Radio Shack, Samsung, and Verizon. (more…)

Linux-powered SBCs target video-over-IP apps

Applied Data Systems (ADS) is sampling a pair of single-board computers (SBCs) aimed at embedded video-over-IP (VIP) applications. The NetCast Streamer can digitize and stream A/V signals at DVD quality, while the NetCast Player can decode streams for NTSC or PAL playback. (more…)

OpenVG implementation taps 3D hardware

Italian start-up Mazatech is offering a technology preview of a commercial library for hardware-accelerated 2D vector graphics. The company's AmanithVG library implements most of the Khronos Group's OpenVG specification, using a pair of 3D APIs, also from the Khronos Group. (more…)

Intel open-sources Linux drivers for gen 4 graphics

Intel has made it easier for Linux users to get the most from its new, fourth-generation graphics architecture. The company's Open Source Technology Center has announced immediate availability of free, open-source software drivers that support the 2D/3D graphics features of the 965 Express Chipset, the first chipset supporting the new architecture. Mobile phone TV — half a billion watching by 2011?

By 2011, 446 million people could be watching TV on their cell phones, according to IMS Research. Given adequate service quality, the market research firm expects 50 percent year-over-year TV phone growth, fueled by both TV-over-cellular and broadcast-based services such as DVB-H. (more…)

Mini-ITX boards target POS, network appliances
