ARM-based SBC comes with embedded Debian

Taiwanese embedded board start-up Embedian is shipping an ARM-based 3.5-inch form-factor SBC (single-board computer) targeting fixed and mobile applications, including mobile terminals, POS devices, kiosks, ATMs, vending machine, networking, gaming, security audio/video processing, and telematics. Linux’s phone success surprises LinuxWorld attendees

Linux customization tool revised

A start-up has revised a tool aimed at helping application developers deploy their software on Linux-based appliances and virtual machines. RPath says rBuilder 2.0 helps software developers create custom Linux implementations and binary images that can be installed on commodity hardware or “live” demo CDs, or run using VMWare Player. Linux gains AoE net-boot

The open source Etherboot project has added support for the ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) protocol invented by network storage vendor Coraid. Coraid claims that the combination of Etherboot and AoE can “dramatically improve” the manageability, reliability, availability, and performance of networked storage. (more…)

License compliance management tools updated

Black Duck has added 30 million commercial software components from 1,000+ vendors to the database that powers its “compliance management software” offering. The company's ProtexIP's database formerly contained primarily open source software “code prints,” or signatures. (more…)

Celebrating the PC’s 25th birthday

This month marks the 25th anniversary of the IBM Personal Computer. The PC was announced on August 12, 1981 and became available for sale two months later. Because IBM encouraged other companies to develop compatible PCs, it quickly became the industry standard, according to market researcher Computer Industry Almanac. (more…)

Compact embedded computers run Linux on Pentium

Acrosser has added three new models to its line of compact, low-power, industrial computers. The AR-ES0831 series supports Linux, and is aimed at space-constrained applications such as kiosks, environmental monitoring, and medical instruments, according to the company. (more…)

Trolltech woos developers with “open” Linux phone

Trolltech, best known for development tools and Linux application stacks for phones and other mobile devices, will ship an “open” Linux-based phone in September. PalmOS ecosystem welcomes mobile Linux developers

Access/PalmSource is inviting developers interested in targeting its Linux-based mobile phone stack to join a new “Access Developer Network” (ADN) online community. Currently, new ADN registrants are redirected to the company's pre-existing PalmOS Developer Pavillion, which, with 420,000 registrants, is probably the largest mobile application ecosystem in the world. Linux cellphone stack approved by #2 Euro carrier

Access/PalmSource announced on Aug. 14 that the Access Linux Platform (ALP) has been approved for use across the network of Europe's second-largest mobile phone operator, Orange Telecom. Linux phone industry groups align

Two industry groups devoted to improving and promoting Linux as a mobile phone platform have announced a formal agreement to cooperate. The Mobile Linux Initiative (MLI) and the Linux Phone Standards Forum (LiPS) say their collaboration will “further accelerate the growth and proliferation of mobile Linux phones and devices worldwide.” (more…)
