Chipset targets digital media-oriented systems

Via Technologies has launched a new core-logic chip aimed at “power-efficient” and “affordable” embedded and desktop systems. ARM9 SoC targets M2M messaging apps

A startup in Penang, Malaysia is readying a Linux-based dual-mode WiFi GSM/GPRS phone expected to ship in Q2. Gupp Technologies's “Phreedom” phone boasts a Treo-style QWERTY keyboard, a 2.5-inch QVGA color screen, and VoWiFi (voice-over-WiFi) capabilities based on the SIP standard. (more…)

Single-core DSP dev kit bundles Linux, virtualization

TI will bundle VirtualLogix's Linux distribution and platform virtualization layer with a DSP development kit that targets multimedia applications. TI's TMS320DM6437 Digital Video Development Platform (DVDP) for DaVinci technology will include a trial version of VLX-DM (digital multimedia) v2.0, along with a no-cost, royalty free Linux BSP (board support package). Real-time JVM targets deeply embedded apps

Aonix has released version 1.0 of a virtual machine said to overcome Java's traditional weaknesses for “deeply embedded” systems. PERC Pico can be used with or without an embedded operating system such as Linux, and offers execution times “similar to C/C++ programs,” with determinism in the low microsecond range, the company claims. A commercial supplier of open-source routing and firewall software has transitioned its community-supported firewall/router Linux distribution to a Debian base. Vyatta Community Edition 2 (VC2) is based on Debian, runs on commodity x86 hardware, includes excellent documentation, and supports numerous enterprise features, including serial T1/E1 cards, VLANs, RIP, and OSPF. High-integration SuperH SoC targets multimedia devices

Japanese semiconductor vendor Renesas is readying a new 32-bit RISC SoC (system-on-chip) with integrated 2D graphics engine and lots of PC peripherals. HelloSoft has ported its IMS/VCC (IP multimedia subsystem / voice call continuity) framework for dual-mode mobile devices to TI's OMAP850 mobile phone processor.
