AMD opens Radeon GPUs to open source development

A year after acquiring ATI, AMD has pledged to open up ATI's flagship Radeon GPUs (graphics processing units) to open source developers. The company plans to release “information and development packages” next week for two ATI GPU families, including one targeting embedded applications such as thin clients and single-board computers. 65nm “STB-on-a-chip” runs Linux

Broadcom is sampling a highly integrated system-on-chip (SoC) for cable, satellite, and IP set-top boxes (STBs). Built on outsourced 65nm process technology, the BCM7405 “STB-on-a-chip” is based on a 400MHz MIPS32/16e processor core, runs Linux, and supports numerous video compression standards as well as networked personal video recorder (PVR) functionality. Intel set-top-box chip gains browser port

Amino has ported Opera Software's Opera 8.5 browser for devices to an Intel XScale chip targeting digital video recorders (DVRs) and other multimedia equipment. Opera for Intel's CE 2110 media processor is initially available in Amino's Linux-based IntActT IPTV stack, with Opera also working on a port, it said. (more…)

ARM invests in Chinese embedded development firm

Microprocessor IP (intellectual property) vendor ARM Ltd. has successfully established a joint venture in China, as part of an investment in Shenzhen-based embedded specialist Embest Info and Tech Co. XenSource has started shipping an “embedded” version of its hypervisor for AMD and Intel processors. XenExpress OEM Edition targets server vendors and other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) interested in delivering systems pre-installed with multiple BIOS partitions, and thus ready for the installation of multiple virtual machines. Gumstix has started shipping an LCD expansion board for its tiny, Linux-oriented, PXA270-based Verdex single-board computer (SBC).
