MicroSD Smart Card adds security to Linux devices

German mobile security specialist IICS has announced what it claims is the world's first Smart Card that fits into a microSD slot. Supporting Linux-based mobile and embedded devices, the “Certgate” incorporates 2048-bit RSA encryption and 512 MB or 1 GB of user-accessible memory, the company says. (more…)

Intel aims to reduce Linux power consumption

Intel has launched an open source project focused on lowering power consumption in Linux-based systems and devices. The project, dubbed “LessWatts.org,” aims to “meet the growing demands for increased energy efficiency across the computing spectrum spanning servers in data centers to personal mobile devices.” (more…)

USB framegrabber comes with Linux SDK

Sensoray has introduced a framegrabber module suitable for use in embedded devices running Linux or Windows. The 2251 framegrabber converts NTSC or PAL composite analog video into compressed MPEG and JPEG digital formats, and interfaces to the host system via high-speed USB, the company said. (more…)

WiFi positioning system SDK targets Linux devices

WiFi positioning system (WPS) technology provider Skyhook Wireless has announced a “major upgrade” to its WPS software development kit (SDK). ARM aims Linux initiative at mobile Internet devices

ARM Ltd. has unveiled a sweeping project designed to ensure that its processors support a modern Web browsing experience on mobile devices running Linux. Spearheaded by embedded Linux service provider Movial, ARM and unnamed partners will port GNOME, Firefox, and associated browser plugins to specific hardware based on ARMv5/6/7 architectures. Debug tool supports Linux on DaVinci CPUs

Linux-friendly hypervisor targets multicore ARM

ARM spins multicore-enabled Cortex core

ARM Ltd has started shipping a multicore-enabled version of its top-of-the-line application processor core for complex OSes such as Linux. The “Cortex A9” will support four-way architectures, clockspeeds over 1GHz, and single-core applications requiring four times the performance of ARM11 within a 250mW power envelope, ARM claims. Trolltech porting Qtopia Core to Windows CE

Trolltech has released a “technology preview” port of its Qt development framework to Microsoft Windows CE. The Qt/WinCE download is said to include nearly all of Qt's 400 C++ class libraries, with the goal of letting developers build Linux, Mac, Windows, and Windows CE binaries from the same code base. Qt, Qtopia to gain lightweight HTML rendering engine

[Updated Oct. 6] — Trolltech will integrate the Webkit html rendering engine into forthcoming versions of its development frameworks for desktop and embedded applications. The lightweight engine — already used in Apple's iPhone and Nokia S60 phones — could help Qt and Qtopia users more easily web-enable a variety of applications and mobile devices. (more…)

Trolltech co-CEO to step back

Trolltech has announced that on Nov. 1, company co-founder and co-CEO of 13 years Eirik Chambe-Eng will reduce his involvement due to eyesight difficulties. Dynamic profiler needs no instrumentation
