Low-cost laptop runs Linpus Linux

Thai systems integrator Norhtec is preparing to release a sub-$300 ultra-mini PC (UMPC) laptop based on a Quanta design. Aimed at the developing-country market, the so-called Gecko Laptop is being built by Quanta and runs Linpus Linux Lite, a new distribution designed for small-screen mini-PCs. (more…)

Celeron-based SBC runs Linux

Acrosser has announced a 3.8 x 3.6 inch single board computer (SBC) equipped with a 600MHz Celeron M CPU. The fanless, Linux-compatible AR-B5020 can be expanded with an optional daughterboard that adds PC/104 and PCI-104 expansion slots, says the company. (more…)

Wind River profits down, but Linux bookings soar

[Updated Mar. 7] — Wind River's 4Q 2008 earnings showed expected revenue growth to $84.3 million and a net loss of $2 million. However, Linux bookings were up 66 percent, with Linux expected to deliver over $50 million in fiscal 2009, about 14 percent of the projected $365 million total. (more…)

Linux-compatible thin clients join virtualization trend

Wyse Technology joined the recent migration of thin clients to virtualization technology by announcing support for VMware technology. All Wyse thin clients running Linux, Windows XP, and Wyse Thin OS will now ship with support for VMware Virtual Desktop Manager 2, says the company. (more…)

Freescale to discuss new chips at tech forums

Freescale Semiconductor and Linux development partner MontaVista have announced dates and locations for five Freescale Technology Forum (FTF) events in 2008. Linux-based NAS stores 2TB

LaCie has shipped a dual-disk, 2TB version of its Linux-based network attached storage (NAS) appliance. The latest “2big Network” device runs an in-house version of Linux called LaCix, and can act as a small business server for FTP, backup, and file-sharing. (more…)

Linux tablet vendor pledges Silverlight support

Nokia promised to support Microsoft's cross-platform multimedia plugin across its major mobile device products. The Finnish mobile-phone giant will add Silverlight support to Symbian S60 smartphones, Series 40 devices, and Linux-based Nokia Internet tablets, it said. (more…)
