Check scanners add Linux support

A vendor of digital check scanners has updated its closed Linux drivers, releasing drivers for recent versions of Red Hat and Ubuntu. Digital Check can also supply custom drivers for device makers and OEMs, it says. (more…)

Linux 2.6.26 brings embedded improvements

A new stable kernel is out. Three months in the making, Linux 2.6.26 boasts read-only bind mounts, “big-iron” KVM ports, USB webcam support, 802.11s mesh WiFi, built-in support for remote kernel debugging, and a host of embedded architecture improvements, among other enhancements. (more…)

CG Linux vendor touts standards-compliance triple crown

MontaVista announced that its Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 is the first Linux distro to be certified for the Linux Foundation's (LF's) Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0, the LF's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0, and IPv6. The claimed hat trick came when it received LSB 3.0 certification this week. (more…)

Linux thin client software certified “Secret”

Trusted Computer Solutions (TCS) has announced Secret and Below Interoperability (SABI) level certification for its Linux-based, thin-client access software. With the SABI rating, the cross-domain SecureOffice Trusted Thin Client (STTC) software now enables easy transfer between classified and “unclassified but sensitive” domains, says TCS. (more…)

Chinese educational handhelds get Qt

A Chinese educational device vendor announced it will use Trolltech's Qt for Embedded Linux application framework in its Linux-based educational devices. Noah Education Holdings currently offers over a dozen handheld “digital-learning devices” (DLDs), three of which run embedded Linux. (more…)

HD-ready media server runs Fedora Linux

“Qseven” COM standard builds on MXM

A consortium called Qseven has released a specification for a Computer-On-Modules (COM) standard that incorporates the MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module) format's finger connector. Led by Congatec, MSC Vertrieb, and Seco, the 14-member group is aiming its Qseven spec at mobile devices using 45nm-fabricated processors. (more…)

Debian COMs connect via MXM

Embedian has announced two computer-on-modules (COMs) and a baseboard that connect via an MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module) connector. The MXM-8310 and MXM-8110 run Debian on a PXA320 (Monahans-P) processor, and offer interfaces for Ethernet, USB, TFT LCD, RS232, CF, and IDE. (more…)

Emerson Network Power (ENP) announced a multi-core AdvancedTCA (ATCA) blade that supports 10Gbps throughput.
