DIY Linux service supports Cortex-A8

Timesys is offering a LinuxLink subscription for the Texas Instruments OMAP35xx line of system-on-chips (SoCs). The subscription includes the new 2.6.26 Linux kernel, toolchain, and hundreds of prebuilt, ready-to-use RFS (root file system) packages optimized for the processors, says Timesys. (more…)

GE Fanuc announced a PowerPC-based single-board computer aimed at saving power and cooling costs in military and aerospace applications. The VG6 is based on Freescale Semiconductor's new single-core MPC8640 and dual-core MPC8640D system-on-chips (SoCs), announced last week. (more…)

Dual-core PPC SoC drives 55

Freescale is sampling a pin-compatible version of its PowerPC-based MPC8641D system-on-chip (SoC) that is claimed to consume 27 percent less power. The 1.0-1.25GHz MPC8640D offers dual e600 cores, a 37 percent lower price, and an optional Linux board support package (BSP), says Freescale. (more…)

Open source webkit-based browser rev’d

Pleyo and Sand-Labs.org have released a third-generation beta version of their Webkit-based, open source browser for consumer-electronics devices. Supporting generic GTK, Access Linux Platform, or SDL (simple direct layer), Origyn Web Browser (OWB) targets consumer devices such as phones, portable media players, and set-top boxes. (more…)

Fabless semi vendor to acquire ARM expertise

Cavium announced it will acquire Star Semiconductor, a Taiwan-based designer of ARM-based system-on-chips (SoCs), for $9 million. Star should provide an entry into the consumer broadband market and ARM processors for Cavium, which currently sells Linux-friendly, multi-core, MIPS64-based networking processors. (more…)

Debug probes expand PowerPC support

Intel aims T9400, GM45 at device market

This week, Intel launched five 45nm Core 2 Duo processors under its new “Centrino 2” moniker. The overall announcement emphasized laptops, but the company's new 2.53GHz T9400 processor and GM45 Express chipset target embedded devices, with a touted seven-year lifecycle and available EMBC2DGM45DRxDK dev board. Axiomtek has announced two aluminum-cased embedded computers targeting automation, kiosk, digital signage, and vehicle applications. The Linux-compatible eBOX832-831 and eBOX832-840 offer dual gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB ports, four COM ports, and two IEEE 1394a ports, according to the company. (more…)
