Low-power netbooks run Linux

A Germany-based retailer called One is shipping four branded, Linux-based netbooks that consume only 3.5 Watts apiece. The One A440, A110, A115, and A140 are all based on the Via C7-M Ultra Low Voltage processor (ULV), and come with integrated Via graphics chips. (more…)

Low-cost ARM9 SBC supports Linux

Glomation announced an ARM9-powered single-board computer (SBC) that runs Linux and costs just $69 in volume. The GESBC-9260 (pictured) measures 3.75 x 3.5 inches, sports Atmel's 200MHz AT91SAM9260, and targets “highly connected image processing applications” such as Ethernet-based IP cameras, and bar code readers, says Glomation. Open phone hardware vendor frees schematics

OpenMoko has promised to publish schematic diagrams for its latest hardware design, the Neo FreeRunner. Schematics should enable community developers to create alternative firmware for the device, in order to better adapt it to entirely new purposes. (more…)

Atom-based tablet runs Linux

Arbor Technology has announced a seven-inch tablet PC that uses Intel Atom processors and runs Linux. The ruggedized Gladius G0710 has a touchscreen display, gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g networking, a two megapixel camera, and survives multiple four-foot drops, according to the company. (more…)

Cortex-A8-based SOM gains Linux support

Timesys is supporting Logic's latest SOM board and development kit with a LinuxLink software subscription. Logic Embedded Product Solutions's OMAP35x SOM-LV board is based on the Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP35x system-on-chips (SoCs) and comes with Logic's Zoom-LV OMAP35x kit. (more…)

Lenovo launches a netbook

Lenovo has announced its entry into the “netbook” market. The Linux-based IdeaPad S9 and Windows-XP-based S10 feature 8.9- and 10-inch displays, respectively, plus 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processors, 1.3 megapixel webcams, 802.11b/g wireless networking, and up to 160GB of storage, says the company. Intel aims x86 at GPU market

Intel says it will “target the personal computer graphics market” as early as next year with a new chip employing multiple Pentium-based cores. “Larrabee” offers claimed support for DirectX and OpenGL, and may compete with the discrete graphics processing units (GPUs) offered by AMD/ATI and Nvidia. CG Linux supports multicore MIPS64

Montavista says its Linux distribution for Carrier Grade infrastructure systems now supports five MIPS64-based multicore system-on-chip processors from Cavium. Specifically, MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 5.0 (CGE) now supports Cavium's CN5800, CN5600, CN5200, CN5000, and CN3800 processor families, the commercial Linux OS and tools provider said. Motorola up in strong phone market

Mobile phone shipments from top-tier handset vendors grew 15 to 22 percent year-over-year, to 301 million units, according to ABI. The figures put the market on pace for 1.8 billion units this year, or 13 percent growth, despite general economic “woes” in other markets. (more…)

LiMo aims DBus at Android

Movial announced it had joined the LiMo Foundation and will soon release open-source code that it expects to be deployed on LiMo phones. Movial's Browser D-Bus Bridge translates HTML and Javascript commands to D-Bus (Desktop Bus) to create “mashups” of applications and services, including Android-like Google apps mashups, says Movial.
