Palm Pre’s price and launch date target iPhone

Palm says its Linux-based Palm Pre smartphone will debut on the Sprint 3G network on June 6, priced at an iPhone-like $200, says eWEEK. However, the Pre is going to require substantial developer support before it beats the iPhone, eWEEK quotes a Gartner analyst as saying. (more…)

Multi-core SoCs go superscalar

RMI Corp. unveiled a superscalar, 40nm-fabricated addition to its family of multi-core MIPS64-based system-on-chips (SoCs) that can support both data- and control-plane processing. The first member of the Linux-compatible XLP family is the XLP832, which can mix eight “EC4400” cores clocked at 500MHz to over 2GHz, the chipmaker says. (more…)

Intel leaks details of “Pine Trail” Atom

Intel has provided a few details of its next-generation Atom platform for netbooks, code-named “Pine Trail.” The new platform shrinks the number of chips required to develop a device down to two, the CPU package called “Pineview” and the I/O controller called “Tiger Point,” reports say. (more…)

TI taps open source media streaming plugin

Aiming to improve Linux multimedia development using its processors, Texas Instruments (TI) has released a version of the open source GStreamer media plugin for its OMAP35x and DaVinci system-on-chips (SoCs). Moblin v2 beta targets netbooks

Remote monitoring device offers 3G modem

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications vendor Sixnet is shipping a cellular-enabled remote monitoring and control device that runs Linux. The PowerPC-based R.A.M.
