SMB-targeted NAS devices run Linux

Iomega has announced a four-drive, 2-8TB StorCenter ix4-200d network-attached storage (NAS) device that runs Linux, according to eWEEK. Meanwhile, NetGear announced that its ReadyNAS storage appliances now support the Remote Agent for Linux and UNIX Servers (RALUS) for Symantec Backup Exec, enabling faster backups.

Console servers run Linux

Acrosser has introduced a pair of console servers that run Linux and offer eight serial ports. The ACS-N5430FL and ACS-N5630FL are equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron M CPUs, hard disk or CompactFlash storage, plus DVI-I, S-Video, and VGA video outputs, the company says.

Networking appliance features five Ethernet ports

Aaeon announced a desktop networking appliance equipped with five networking ports, two with LAN bypass. The FWS-7150 comes with a choice of Via Eden (up to 2GHz) or Via C7 (1GHz) processors, supports up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, and offers SATA and solid-stage storage options, says the company.

Study: Dual-mode WiFi handsets to double every two years

ABI Research has released a report predicting a doubling of dual-mode phones supporting both WiFi and cellular networks every two years. The research firm predicts that 144 million dual-mode handsets will ship this year, rising to more than 300 million in 2011.

COM Express module sports dual-core Celeron

MSC Vertriebs has announced a COM Express module that employs Intel's recently announced, dual-core Celeron T3100. The MSC CXB-GM45-T3100 offers up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, supports dual independent displays, and offers four SATA-300 interfaces, the company says.

Atom-powered PC/104+ SBC targets display devices

Win Enterprises announced a fanless, Linux-compatible PC/104+ single board computer (SBC) aimed at display-oriented embedded applications. The MB-73200 is equipped with an Intel Atom Z5xx CPU clocked at 1GHz or 1.6GHz, dual Ethernet ports, and SATAII and CompactFlash interfaces, says the company.

More signs point to Samsung Linux phone

A Samsung executive has confirmed the company is preparing its own version of Linux for a new smartphone, says an industry report. Meanwhile, another story has leaked a sketch of a Linux-based “Samsung i8320” phone said to be near completion, and this device may be Samsung's first LiMo-compliant model.

Android demo’d on MIPS-driven 1080p display

MIPS Technologies announced two more video-oriented system-on-chip vendor partners who will use its MIPS-architecture Android implementation, developed by Embedded Alley. Sigma Designs is demonstrating an Android- and MIPS-based set-top box (STB) prototype displaying 1080p video, and ALi Corp. announced it is also joining MIPS' Android partner program.

Sharp spins Ubuntu-based palmtop

Sharp announced an heir to its Zaurus line of Linux-based PDAs: an Ubuntu Linux-based palmtop with claimed three-second boot-ups and ten-hour battery life. The “NetWalker PC-Z1 Mobile Internet Tool” is equipped with an ARM Cortex-A8 based Freescale i.MX515 SoC, a five-inch WSVGA touchscreen, and a QWERTY keyboard, says Sharp.

Nokia debuts smartphone-like Maemo 5 Linux device

Nokia announced its “N900” heir to the N810 Internet Tablet, running its new Maemo 5 Linux distribution. Upgrading to a Texas Instruments ARM Cortex-A8-based OMAP3430 SoC with 1GB of memory and 32GB flash, the device adds 3G HSPA connectivity, and offers a 3.5-inch, 800 × 480 touchscreen and five megapixel camera.

Tiny Atom PC sports HDMI port

Portwell is shipping a fanless, Intel Atom-based PC that uses less than seven Watts and measures just 4.5 x 4.0 x 1.05 inches. The WEBS-1010 includes a miniSD socket and a 2.5-inch disk bay, HDMI video output, an IR receiver, and six USB ports, the company says.

Mot Android phone(s) may debut on Sept. 10

Motorola has sent out “save-the-date” notices for an Android-themed press event on Sept. 10 that is likely to see the announcement of the company's first two Android phones, says eWEEK. The manufacturer is expected to announce a “Sholes” smartphone, destined for Verizon Wireless and/or a “Morrison” model, headed for T-Mobile, says the story.

Octagon Systems announced a ruggedized mobile computer for police, taxi, medical, trucking, transit system, and mesh security network applications. The Linux-ready Fleet Core computer offers an Intel Atom N270, GPS, and gigabit Ethernet, and provides fanless operation over a -25 to 70 deg. C temperature range, says the company.

Low-cost ARM9 chip gains Linux development support

Timesys announced a new version of its LinuxLink software development framework for embedded Linux that supports the 2.6.30 kernel and Atmel's industrial- and PoS-focused, ARM9-based AT91SAM9G45 processor. LinuxLink now supports Atmel's SAM9G45 evaluation kit and provides a wide variety of peripheral drivers, says the company.

Linux-ready phone includes both x86 and ARM CPUs

Korean company Miutech has announced a Linux-compatible device claimed to squeeze an Atom-powered PC and an ARM-based mobile phone into a single package. Sporting dual displays, the HDPC (hybrid dual portable computer) offers a 5-megapixel camera, dual VGA video cameras, Ethernet, WiFi, cellular, GPS, and T-DMB terrestrial video, says Miutech.
