Commell announced a 3.5-inch single board computer (SBC) equipped with the thermally enhanced, automotive-focused Intel Atom Z510P CPU. The LE-375 provides gigabit Ethernet and includes support for 3D graphics, H.264 video acceleration, and dual displays, says Commell.
The Swedish company Hectronic announced a Qseven COM (computer on module) and a carrier board to go with it. The H6049 module and H4103 carrier provide an Intel Atom Z5xx processor, up to 1GB of RAM, a SSD (solid state disk), four PCI Express x1 slots, and a Linux BSP (board support package), says Hectronic.
Embedded virtualization vendor Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) announced a partnership with wireless semiconductor firm ST-Ericsson. The joint project will combine OK Labs' OKL4 hypervisor and ST-Ericsson 3G multimedia chipsets on an ARM Cortex A9 multi-core platform running mobile open source operating systems including Linux, Android, and Symbian, says OK Labs.
Mobile WiMAX provider Clearwire Communications has announced plans to offer service in eight additional U.S. cities during the fourth quarter, for a total of more than 25 markets by year's end. In related news, Clearwire demonstrated international roaming via Aicent's WRX (WiMAX roaming exchange), and the Maravedis analyst firm said WiMAX subscriptions are increasing 74 percent year-over-year.
Thecus Technology announced a Linux-based, seven-bay networked-attached storage (NAS) appliance. The N7700Pro runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo with up to 4GB of DDR2 800 memory, has dual gigabit Ethernet adapters plus a PCI Express x8 slot, and supports 14TB of storage, says the company.
Timesys announced that its LinuxLink development framework now supports Altera's Nios II 32-bit soft RISC processor cores, which are available for Altera's FPGAs. LinuxLink for Nios II includes a board support package (BSP) for Altera's Nios II Embedded Evaluation Kit and Embedded Systems Development Kit, Cyclone III Edition, says Timesys.
Tilera Corp. announced a new family in its Linux-ready “Tile” line of massively multi-core system-on-chips (SoCs), including a model touted as “the world's first 100-core processor.” The 40nm-fabricated Tile-Gx family features a new 64-bit core and DDR3 memory controllers, and includes 16-, 36-, 64-, and 100-core models.
Qualcomm has established a subsidiary to develop software for mobile open source platforms. The Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. (QUIC) will optimize open source software with Qualcomm technology, using platforms including Linux, Webkit, Android, Chrome, and Symbian, which last week achieved a major milestone in migrating to open source.
iWave Systems of Bangalore announced a Linux-compatible, Intel Atom-based reference design for UMPCs (ultra mobile PCs) or in-car computers. The iW-Rainbow-G6 is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen, and is available with optional cellular and GPS modules, the company says.
Axiomtek has introduced a “3.5-inch” SBC (single board computer) that uses the “PT” versions of Intel's Atom, offering an operating range of -40 to 185 deg. F. The SBC84823 includes VGA and LVDS video, six USB ports, four serial ports, plus Mini PCI Express and CompactFlash expansion, the company says.

IP Infusion announced a Linux-based networking server package based on its ZebOS carrier-grade middleware. Xilinx and ARM Holdings announced they are collaborating to enable ARM's processor and interconnect technologies on forthcoming FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays). Xilinx will adopt ARM's Cortex processor IP and its AMBA (advanced microprocessor bus architecture), the companies said.

Japanese software firm Access and Israeli mobile design firm Emblaze Mobile today demonstrated a smartphone prototype and device stack based on the LiMo-compatible Access Linux Platform (ALP) 3.0. The Else phone incorporates a Texas Instruments OMAP3430, 16GB internal flash, 3G, WiFi, GPS, and jointly developed “Else Intuition” software.
