Celeron-based controller has eight-bit digital I/O

Aaeon announced an Intel Celeron-based system controller that includes 8-bit digital I/O, four serial ports, and dual video outputs. The GES-3300F includes a 1.86GHz Celeron M440 CPU, a CompactFlash slot and 2.5-inch drive bay, plus six USB 2.0 ports, the company says.

Google Chrome OS tablet headed for Verizon?

HTC is building a Chrome OS tablet for Google, set for a Verizon launch on Nov. 26, an industry report claims. Meanwhile, Pandigital released its second seven-inch Android-based e-reader tablet, with more memory than before plus a smaller, lighter design.

Flash memory shrinks to fit embedded devices

SanDisk announced an SSD (solid state drive) it touts as the first of a new breed aimed at embedded devices. The integrated SSD (iSSD) packs from 4GB to 64GB of storage, yet it's smaller than a postage stamp and weighs less than a paper clip, the company says.

Dangerous security flaw patched in Linux

A critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel that gives attackers access to root via X server has been patched by Linus Torvalds, says an industry report. Meanwhile, kernel developer James Morris reports on last week's Linux Security Summit (LSS), which covered topics including mobile and MeeGo security, usability issues, hardening the kernel, and Linux security API standardization.

Startup tips seven-inch Android tablet

A startup called Stream TV Networks is readying a seven-inch Android tablet called the eLocity A7, with preorders starting Aug. 24. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet will be unveiled in two weeks at the IFA 2010 show in Berlin, and will run Android 2.2, reports say.

Signage PC sports dual DVI ports

IEI Technology announced a PC with dual DVI outputs and support for 1080p HD video. The ECN-581A-QM57 uses a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-520M processor, supports up to 4GB of RAM and a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive, and offers a Mini PCI Express slot for an optional Wi-Fi adapter, the company says.

Ubuntu gets multitouch support, Unity netbook UI

Canonical released a multitouch and gesture stack for Ubuntu 10.10 (“Maverick Meerkat”). uTouch 1.0 offers a gesture API and recognition engine for Meerkat, which recently shipped in its third alpha, offering Software Centre improvements and a Netbook Edition revamped with Canonical's “Unity” UI stack.

Linux defense group invests in mobile ID security

Linux patent defense organization Open Invention Network (OIN) announced a partnership with Arizona State University's Arizona Technology Enterprises (AzTE) office, focused on mobile device identity management research. As part of the agreement, OIN acquired key intellectual property from AzTE aimed at providing “intellectual property for defensive purposes” for open source software on mobile devices, says OIN.

Arista announced a new series of 24-inch industrial LCD marquee display systems. The AMS Series offers a 500MHz Via Eden processor, 2GB of RAM, plus storage and connectivity features, and comes as an AMS-2401 single-display wall-mount system, an AMS-2412 wall-mount system with dual side-by-side displays, or an AMS-2422 ceiling-mount model with dual back-to-back displays.

Google vows to fight Oracle lawsuit as Java creator speaks out

Google has vowed to fight Oracle's patent lawsuit over use of Java patents in Android, claiming that Android's Dalvik implementation is not covered. Meanwhile, Java creator James Gosling blogs that neither side in the lawsuit is without blame, but calls the suit a victory for “ego, money and power” at the expense of open software development, says eWEEK.

New Atoms announced, amidst leaks about 2011 successors

Intel says it is now shipping two new 1.8GHz Atoms, the single-core D425 and dual-core D525, aimed at networked storage appliances. Meanwhile, leaks have provided information about “Medfield” — a 2011 successor to the Atom-based “Moorestown” SoC — and forthcoming “Sandy Bridge” desktop CPUs.

Asus to launch Android tablet in March

Asus says it will launch an Android-based “Eee Pad” EP101TC tablet in March for under $400, and will ship its previously announced Linux-based, monochrome Eee Tablet in October for $300. Meanwhile, Notion Ink's much-delayed Android-based Adam tablets are set to ship by January for $400 to $500, says the company.

ESC Boston features Linux/Android track

The EE Times Group has announced keynotes and tracks for its ESC (Embedded Systems Conference) Boston, set for Sept. 20 to 23. ESC Boston includes a Linux/Android track, with half-day tutorials on each plus sessions on MeeGo, and once again offers its “Build Your Own Embedded System” track, this time using a BeagleBoard-xM.

TI launches 720p-ready Cortex-A8 SoC

Texas Instruments announced two 720p video-ready ARM Cortex-A8 SoCs (system-on-chips) it says are up to 50 percent faster than the popular OMAP35xx, while using 40 percent less power. The DaVinci DM3730 uses a 1GHz Cortex-A8 core, a 800MHz C64x+ DSP core, and a 3D graphics accelerator, while the DaVinci DM3725 model is similar except for the 3D support.

LinuxCon grapples with challenges, from mobile to multicore

This week's LinuxCon show featured some lively discussions over the fate of the fast-growing open source operating system, says eWEEK. Hosted by the Linux Foundation (LF), the event explored cloud computing, social networking, Android integration, GPL licensing, Linux kernel challenges such as multicore processing and code complexity, and MeeGo, among other issues.
