Is HP’s WebOS heading for netbooks?

[Updated: 2PM] — HP is prepping a netbook using its Linux-based WebOS operating system, says an industry report. On Feb. 9, HP is expected to announce several WebOS devices, including nine-inch “Topaz” and seven-inch “Opal” tablets, says Engadget.

Atom-based network appliance available in desktop or rackmount versions

Acrosser is shipping two similar networking appliances built around Intel Atom D410 or D510 processors. The desktop AR-N6000 and the 1U rackmount AR-R6000 support up to 2GB DDR2 memory, and offer four gigabit Ethernet ports with LAN bypass, four USB 2.0 ports, dual SATA ports, and PCIe expansion, says the company.

BCM unveils Mini-ITX boards running old and new Core CPUs

BCM Advanced Research announced an “MX57QM” Mini-ITX board based on last year's Intel Core i7/i5/i3 processors. The company also announced two Mini-ITX boards based on the recently announced “Sandy Bridge” versions of the Intel Core — the ATX-powered MX67QM and DC-powered MX67QMD — as well as an RX67Q Micro ATX board, but offered few details.

Sandy Bridge COM Express module offers a bounty of video options

Advantech announced a COM Express 2.0 Type 6 computer-on-module (COM) based on Intel's new “Sandy Bridge” Core processors and QM67 chipset. The SOM-5890 offers up to 16GB of DDR3 memory — as well as PCIe, SATA3, gigabit Ethernet, and other I/O — and supports display options including VGA, dual-channel 18/24-bit LVDS, SVDO, HDMI, DVI, and Displayport, says the company.

Xoom wins huge pre-orders as Asus denies Eee Pad slippage

Massive pre-orders show that demand is high for the Motorola Xoom Android 3.0 tablet, as well as the RIM PlayBook tablet, says an industry report. Meanwhile, Asus has denied rumors that its Eee Pad tablets will be delayed and won't run Android 3.0, says another report, and LG's G-Slate gains a sign-up page on T-Mobile.

Buffalo launches first Pogoplug device with internal storage

Buffalo Technology announced a web-accessible “Buffalo CloudStor” networked-attached storage (NAS) device for home users with up to 2TB of storage, based on Cloud Engines' Linux-driven Pogoplug device. The company also announced a new series of “TeraStation Pro” NAS devices for small businesses that can scale from 4TB up to 24TB and run on a dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor.

Linux supercomputer beats humans in Jeopardy match

IBM showed off its Linux-based Watson supercomputer in an exhibition “Human vs. Machine” game of Jeopardy, while discussing potential practical uses of its natural-language AI in the IT industry, especially in health care and tech support. Watson beat two human challengers in this practice round, but the real winner will be proven in a televised competition in February.

Android to grow at twice the rate of iOS in 2011, says study

As pundits predict resurgent iPhone sales with Verizon's iPhone 4 launch this week, Canalys projects Android will shrug it off and continue to grow at more than twice the rate of the iPhone in 2011. Meanwhile, Android claimed 46 percent of U.S. ad impression share in December compared to 32 percent for Apple iOS, says Millennial Media.

Intel reports record revenues, keeps pushing tablets

Intel announced $11.5 billion in fourth quarter revenues — up 8 percent over 4Q 2009 — topping off record yearly revenues of $43.6 billion. Intel again emphasized tablets as a key market for 2011, not only to boost Atom sales, but also to feed a server processor market that is thriving on cloud-based services for mobile devices.

Product launches expose Intel’s unannounced low-voltage Cores

Adlink announced a bevy of devices using Intel's embedded-specific “Sandy Bridge” processors — including two previously unknown low-voltage models. The Express-HR is a Type 6 COM Express module; the cPCI-3970 is a 3U CompactPCI board that comes in nine different versions; and the NuPro-E340 is a full-size PICMG 1.3 SHB (system host board), according to the company.

Google Translate for Android gets a makeover

Google has released an upgrade to its Google Translate for Android app, incorporating a natural-language “conversation mode.” Meanwhile, the company's YouTube subsidiary partnered with Vevo to make music videos available free via the YouTube 2.0 Android app, and Google acquired eBook Technologies to bolster its Android-compatible eBookstore service.

Gumstix announced a rechargeable, GPS-enabled expansion board for its Linux-ready, TI OMAP35x based Overo Computer-on-Modules (COMs). The Gallop43 is equipped with the U-blox Neo-5G GPS module, and offers connectors for a two-cell NiMH rechargeable battery pack and a 4.3-inch LCD-ready touchscreen, thereby providing a mobile companion board to any Overo-based device, says the company.
