Sandy Bridge COM Express module offers a bounty of video options
Jan 17, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsAdvantech announced a COM Express 2.0 Type 6 computer-on-module (COM) based on Intel's new “Sandy Bridge” Core processors and QM67 chipset. The SOM-5890 offers up to 16GB of DDR3 memory — as well as PCIe, SATA3, gigabit Ethernet, and other I/O — and supports display options including VGA, dual-channel 18/24-bit LVDS, SVDO, HDMI, DVI, and Displayport, says the company.
The SOM-5890 joins a number of COM Express modules based on Intel's "Sandy Bridge" Core processors, including Adlink's Express-HR, Congatec's Conga-BM67, Eurotech's Adbc8034, Kontron's ETXexpress-SC, and RadiSys' Procelerant-CEQM67. The SOM-5890 supports one of four newly-revised Core i7 processor models, at up to 2.5GHz, says Advantech (see spec sheet below). The module supports up to 16GB of dual-channel DDR3-1333, and supplies the new Intel QM67 chipset, says the company.

As a result, the SOM-5890 provides DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI video interfaces, as well as SVDO, LVDS and VGA output. Expansion takes the form of seven PCI Express (PCIe) x1 lanes and one PEG x16 interface, says Advantech. As with the Adlink Express-HR, the device also offers dual 6Gbps SATA 3 ports, as well as dual 3Gbps SATA 2 interfaces.
