Android makes tablet gains, but iPad to stay strong in 2011, say studies

Apple's share of the media tablet market fell to 73 percent in 4Q 2010, due to the arrival of Android tablets led by the Samsung Galaxy Tab, says IDC. Still, the iPad will maintain a 70-80 percent share in 2011, the research firm adds, while Forrester puts the figure at 80 percent, and projects that only Amazon.com could mount significant competition via a color Kindle.

HP’s desktop plans for WebOS could flip PC market, say analysts

Many analysts are applauding HP's decision to place its Linux-based WebOS on all of its Windows-based PCs in 2012 as an alternative fast-boot distro, but some caution it could alienate Microsoft. The deployment will represent a huge leap forward for Linux on the desktop, albeit in a limited capacity — and HP may be grooming WebOS for a bigger desktop role.

1U networking appliance offers PCI slot

Win Enterprises announced a 1U rackmount network appliance with a single- or dual-core Atom processor plus both PCI and Mini PCI expansion slots. The PL-80300 includes a CompactFlash slot and 3.5-inch drive bay, six gigabit Ethernet ports, three USB ports, and a serial console port, according to the company.

iOS beats Android at open source app compliance, says study

OpenLogic announced the results of a license-compliance assessment of 635 Android, iPhone, and iPad apps, finding that of the 66 apps with open source GPL/LPGL or Apache licenses, 71 percent failed to comply with license requirements. Apple iOS actually scored higher at compliance, with 32 percent compared to 29 percent compliance for Android apps, says the study.

OK Labs tips partner for ultra-secure mobile hypervisor

OK Labs announced a partnership with security IT firm Galois to develop and commercialize ultra-secure communications, data processing, and control systems based on the OKL4 hypervisor. Initially designed for virtual cohabitation with Linux, Android, and embedded RTOSes on secure mobile and other embedded devices, the solutions will meet standards including EAL5-EAL7, says OK Labs.

DIN-rail PC works to 158 deg. F

Axiomtek announced a fanless DIN-rail computer designed to tolerate temperatures from -40 to 158 deg. F. The rBOX200 provides an AMD LX800 processor, up to 1GB of RAM, CompactFlash storage, redundant power inputs, and dual 10/100 Ethernet ports with magnetic isolation protection, the company says.

Fedora 15 alpha debuts GNOME 3, adds cloud appliance builder

The Fedora project released an alpha version of Fedora Linux 15 (“Lovelock”), debuting GNOME 3.0 and its new GNOME Shell UI layer. Fedora 15 also features KDE 4.6, LibreOffice, a cloud-oriented BoxGrinder appliance builder, and the availability of SystemD as the default configuration system.

Canonical tips Oneiric Ocelot release amid Ubuntu controversy

Canonical has announced Ubuntu 11.10 (“Oneiric Ocelot”) featuring an alternative 2D UI and more Qt integration. Meanwhile, controversy's looming over the company's alleged anti-open source behavior in recent changes to Ubuntu, new tablet-focused features have been tipped, and the Linux distro has been ported to Motorola's Xoom tablet.

Panel PC shrugs off water

Avalue announced a 15-inch panel PC that's suitable for use in marine or industrial applications, thanks to IP65 sealing all around. The SPC-1505 includes a 1.8GHz, dual-core Atom D525 processor, up to 3GB of RAM, hard disk or CompactFlash storage, plus waterproof I/O ports, the company says.

Linux security mailing list infiltrated, crippled by hackers

The mail server hosting the members-only security mailing list “Vendor-Sec” for open source Linux vendors has been severely damaged, shutting down the list for the time being. Much of the information on the list was under embargo, offering a direct source of exploits for unpatched vulnerabilities in Linux and BSD.

Enterproid keeps personal and work data separate

Enterproid is the latest solution to crack the mobile device management market, focusing first on Android with its Divide platform. Divide is different, says Enterproid, because it functions at the application layer, offering greater flexibility, and that could mean trouble for enterprise phones like RIM's BlackBerry, according to this analysis.

USB device lets multiple users share one PC

Pluggable announced a device that allows multiple users to share a single Linux or Windows PC via USB. The DC-125 USB 2.0 Docking Client includes an upstream port for connection to a host, two downstream USB 2.0 ports, audio I/O jacks, and a VGA output that supports screens up to 1280 x 1024 pixels, the company says.

Desktop network appliance uses QorIQ SoCs

Lanner announced a “cost effective” desktop network appliance based on Freescale's PowerPC-based QorIQ processors. The MR-350 is available either with a single-core QorIQ P1011 (533MHz) or dual-core QorIQ P1020 (800MHz), and offers up to 1GB dual-channel DDR3 memory, 256MB of NAND flash, and five gigabit Ethernet ports controlled via a Marvell 888E6171R switch, says the company.

Forthcoming AMD processors revealed

AMD plans to add two chips and “Turbo Core” acceleration technology to its successful line of E-Series APUs (accelerated processing units) in the third quarter, says the Xbitlabs website. Meanwhile, shipments of high-end, “Bulldozer”-based FX-Series chips will start in June, and mid-range “Llano”-based A-Series devices in July, according to writer Anton Shilov.

Open source pow-wow kicks off Linux’ 20th anniversary

The Linux Foundation announced keynotes and a full program for its Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit, scheduled April 6-8 in San Francisco. Featuring keynotes from Google's Michael Rubin and Qualcomm's Mark Charlebois, the event will kick off this year's Linux 20th anniversary celebrations, leading up to an official celebration in August.
