1U networking appliance offers PCI slot

Win Enterprises announced a 1U rackmount network appliance with a single- or dual-core Atom processor plus both PCI and Mini PCI expansion slots. The PL-80300 includes a CompactFlash slot and 3.5-inch drive bay, six gigabit Ethernet ports, three USB ports, and a serial console port, according to the company.

The PL-80300 is basically a 1U rackmount version of the PL-80260 desktop networking appliance Win Enterprises announced in December. Like the PL-80260 (pictured at right), the offers a choice of a single-core Atom D410 or dual-core D510 CPU. It employs the 82801HM I/O controller and supports up to 2GB of RAM via a single SODIMM slot, the company adds.

As far as we can see, the only major difference between the PL-80300 and the PL-80260, aside from the larger, 1U rackmount size, is the addition of a PCI slot. This offers additional customization opportunities, for example with the addition of FXO/FXS, T1/E1, and Crypto acceleration cards, says the company. Like the desktop model, the PL-80300 also offers Mini PCI expansion.

The only other major change is the addition of an LCD module display, as well as the availability of an internal 3.5-inch bay for a SATA hard disk drive instead of the desktop model's 2.5-inch HDD support. A Type II CompactFlash slot is also supplied.

Win Enterprises says the PL-80300 has up to six gigabit Ethernet ports, two of which feature LAN bypass. The PL-80260 also has three USB 2.0 ports, two external and one internal. While the Atom processors include integral GPUs (graphics processing units), this device lacks a VGA port, offering only an RJ45 connector for a serial console.

According to Win Enterprises, the PL-80300 supports multiple Linux variants, including Fedora 13, Debian 5.0.6, and OpenSUSE 11.3. It also supports Windows 7 and Windows XP Pro, says the company.
