Adobe will create an embedded Linux version of Adobe Reader, and Sony will use the software in a car navigation system. Sony will incorporate the portable document file (PDF) file viewer in its embedded Linux based HDD AV Navi XYZ series of car navigation systems for the Japanese market.

Adobe says its embedded Reader and the Sony navigation systems, which launched today, will enable customers to access PDF files they encounter on the Web or receive via email while traveling by car. Such content could include tourist books, digital photographs, and multimedia.

The new Adobe Reader will target “a consumer electronics version of the Linux platform,” according to Adobe. Sony, along with Matsushita, launched a consumer electronics version of Linux in December, 2002, before helping to form the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) in July, 2003. CELF maintains the Consumer Electronics Linux source tree.

Bruce Chizen, president and chief executive officer of Adobe, said, “Sony's leadership in the consumer electronics market is unmatched, and with its backing this new version of Linux has limitless potential.”
