Several large chip and handset makers are backing an alliance chartered to bring high-quality television to mobile devices in the US. The Mobile DTV Alliance initially comprises representatives of Intel, Texas Instruments (TI), Motorola, and Nokia, along with US DVB-H (digital video broadcast — handhelds) operator Modeo.

The new Mobile TV Alliance says it will promote DVB-H and other “open procedure standards and best practices.” The DVB-H standard aims to deliver an improved end user experience and lower network usage compared to current video streaming services that utilize cellular networks. It is maintained by the Digital Video Broadcasting Project, and is currently undergoing field-testing in several locations worldwide, the Alliance says.

The new Alliance is directed by Mike Ramke, VP of marketing and business development at Modeo. Modeo, (formerly Crown Castle) plans to operate DVB-H services in the US, using 5MHz of frequency spectrum that it purchased in an FCC auction.
