eWEEK has published a story that presents analyst and industry reactions to the news earlier this week that the Free Standards Group will split the Linux Standards Base into modular components. The reactions are overwhelmingly positive, with little fear that the move will “fragment” Linux.

According to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, author of the eWEEK story, IDC's Dan Kuznetzky feels the move makes sense given the differing requirements of embedded, server, and desktop Linux systems. Robert Francis Group's Stacey Quandt agrees that a modular LSB could lower the cost for ISVs (independent software vendors) of supporting different Linux distributions.

On the industry side, Novell's Markus Rex, GM of SuSE Linux, says that certification is important, and efforts to make certification easier without radically increasing its cost are worthwhile. Red Hat's VP of tools development Karen Bennet says her company will continue to work with the FSG to define the new LSB standard and certify Red Hat products.
