Arabella optimizes Linux for Freescale NPUs

Jun 20, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Arabella Software is demonstrating Linux software and microcode for Freescale NPUs (network processing units) at Freescale's developer event in Orlando this week. The EFP (expedited fast path) products target Linux-based networking and triple-play (voice-video-data) devices built with Freescale chips having integrated network acceleration engines.

Freescale's older communications processors integrate the CPM (communications processor module) network accelerator, while newer processors such as the MPC8360E use the QUICC Engine. Arabella's EFP products include microcode for the both CPM and QUICC Engine, along with software that implements an asymmetrical multiprocessing architecture in which the fast-path functions found in networking applications are off-loaded to the network engine.

Availability

EFP products are currently beta testing, with availability expected in Q3. They will be available under a royalty-free license for a one-time fee, or as part of an annual subscription. Additionally, they will be available as part of a modified version of Arabella's embedded Linux distribution.
