ATI high-integration set-top box chip gains Linux support
May 20, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 3 viewsMontaVista Software announced embedded Linux support for ATI's highly integrated Xilleon 220 system-on-chip processor which targets set-top boxes, digital TVs, and other consumer electronics devices. The two companies demonstrated the new embedded Linux support at the Mediacast 2003 conference in London, UK, held from May 20 to 22, 2003.
According to ATI, the Xilleon 220 integrates — within a single chip — all processor, graphics, video, audio, and I/O (input and output) capabilities needed in a set-top box or digital TV. Features include a 300 MHz MIPS RISC architecture CPU, dual-SD (standard definition) and dual-HD (high definition) capable MPEG-2 decoder, audio decoder, dual display engine, 2D and 3D graphics engine, conditional access, transport demultiplexers, PCI, USB, and hard drive interfaces. Only tuners, modems, and memory need to be added externally to complete the design for many consumer devices, ATI said.
MontaVista said its support for ATI's Xilleon system-on-chip processor will be released into its MontaVista Linux Professional Edition software product by mid-year, 2003.
