Surveillance DVR reference design runs Linux

Fabless semiconductor firm Conexant and Taiwan-based system-on-chip (SoC) design company Grain Media announced a Linux-based hardware/software platform for video, image processing, and surveillance applications. Intended for creation of 16-channel digital video recorders (DVRs), the reference design combines Conexant's CX25838 multichannel video decoders and Grain Media's ARM-based GM8186/GM8187 SoC, which specializes in H.264 compression.

Samsung predicts a million Galaxy Tab sales for 2010

Samsung is predicting it will sell one million Galaxy Tab Android tablets and 20 million Galaxy S smartphones in 2010, adding that more tablets are on the way. Meanwhile, comScore says Samsung has become the leading U.S. handset maker, and iSuppli reveals that the Galaxy Tab parts cost a mere $205.22 — almost $60 less than those of the market-leading iPad.

Android jumps to 44 percent U.S. smartphone share

Sales of Android phones led Apple iOS, RIM's BlackBerry and others in the U.S. in the third quarter, shipping on about 44 percent of new smartphones, according to research from Canalys and the NPD Group. Worldwide, some 20 million Android phones were sold in the third quarter, representing a quarter of the market, says Canalys.

Linux development board and BSP ships for multicore MIPS SoC

NetLogic Microsystems has released a Linux development kit and board support package (BSP) for its MIPS-based eight-core XLP system-on-chip (SoC). The XLP Multi-Core Processor Development Kit includes a development board, software tools, libraries, drivers, and reference solutions, says the chipmaker.

FTC modifies antitrust settlement to allow Oak Trail launch

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has modified an agreement it reached with Intel settling antitrust complaints against the chipmaker. As a result, the company's forthcoming “Oak Trail” Atom will be allowed to ship without a PCI Express interface until July 2013.

Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) is shipping a 3U CompactPCI single board computer (SBC) based on the Intel Core i7 processor and Intel QM57 chipset. Offering conduction- or air-cooled designs and three ruggedization levels, the XPedite7330 is equipped with a DVI port, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two serial ports, and four SATA ports, the company says.

Linux/Android HMI kit upgrades to 1GHz Cortex-A8 SoC

TES Electronic Solutions announced a new member of its Linux- and Android-ready “Magik” computer-on-module (COM) and HMI development kit family, this time with TI's DaVinci DM3730 system-on-chip. The Magik-MX-37 COM has 512MB RAM and up to 1GB of flash storage, and the compete kit offers a seven-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen plus I/O including Ethernet, USB, and HDMI.

T-Mobile launches MyTouch 4G, expands HSPA+ network

T-Mobile began selling its HTC-manufactured MyTouch 4G Android 2.2 smartphone, which runs on its HSPA+ network. The carrier also announced further expansion of HSPA+ to six more cities, and now officially dubs it a 4G network, instead of 3.5G.

T-Mobile unveils budget Android phones from LG, Mot, and Huawei

T-Mobile announced the availability of four Android smartphones selling for under $100. In addition to announcing the new T-Mobile Comet (apparently based on the Huawei Ideos U8110) and the previously unveiled LG Optimus T, Motorola Defy, and Motorola Charm, the carrier unveiled new data plans, including a tethering and Wi-Fi-sharing service.

Atom-powered tablet boots Windows 7 or Android

ViewSonic announced two tablet computers, one capable of booting into either Android 1.6 or Windows 7 Home Premium, and the other devoted to running Android 2.2. The ViewSonic 10 has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom CPU and a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, while the ViewSonic 7 has an unnamed ARM CPU, a seven-inch screen with 800 x 480 pixels, Android Market compatibility, and dual cameras, according to the company.

The Automotive Connectivity Middleware offers a complete media and networking infrastructure, including wireless connectivity, phone management, and integration with mapping and telematics functionality, says the company.

5.25-inch SBC has Core CPUs, four SATA ports

Ibase announced a “5.25-inch” single board computer (SBC) that supports Intel's 2.53GHz Core i7-610E or 2.13GHz Core i3-300E. The IB957 offers up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, HDMI and DisplayPort video outputs, four SATA II ports, and a Mini PCI Express expansion slot, according to the company.

Apple sues Motorola over multitouch in Android phones

Apple sued Motorola for infringing on six patents related to multitouch and other access technologies in its Android smartphones. Responding to a Motorola lawsuit against Apple three weeks ago over smartphone-related patents, the Apple suit hopes to stop Motorola from selling its popular, Android-based Droid phones.

x86 market slows in 3Q as Intel launches standards groups

Intel dominated x86 chip sales, but lost market share to AMD during the third quarter, according to Mercury Research. Meanwhile, Intel, Dell, EMC, IBM, and Fujitsu formed an SSD Form Factor Working Group to establish a standard for PCI Express motherboard cards, and Intel also launched a new Open Data Center Alliance for standardized cloud services, says eWEEK.
