Timesys spins free web version of LinuxLink development platform

Timesys announced the availability of the LinuxLink Free Edition, a “cloud” version of its Linux development platform that provides kernels, toolchains, debuggers, the TimeStorm Eclipse IDE, and the Web Factory build system. The company also announced a LinuxLink subscription for running MeeGo on the new Intel Atom E6xx processor.

Motorola Droid X gets Android 2.2 upgrade

Android 2.2 (“Froyo”) began rolling out on Verizon Wireless' Motorola Droid X smartphone today, a month after it was initially promised. Customers can have the upgrade pushed over the air to the 4.3-inch, 1GHz Droid X or pull it manually from their phone, says Verizon.

Home energy gateway platform runs mystery SoC

Freescale Semiconductor announced a Home Energy Gateway (HEG) “smart grid” reference platform that can be based on three existing ARM processors or a yet-to-be-announced mystery SoC (system-on-chip). Supported with Linux and Windows BSPs by Adeneo Embedded, the HEG offers features for collecting power consumption data over ZigBee networks from Home Area Network (HAN) appliances, controlling power activation, and communicating with utility networks.

Automation computer targets industrial networking

Moxa announced a Linux-ready RISC/XScale-based embedded computer aimed at industrial networking and automation applications. The UC-8430 is equipped with a 533MHz Intel XScale IXP435 processor, provides optional extended temperature support, and offers connectivity including three 10/100 Ethernet ports, eight serial ports, six USB 2.0 ports, dual VGA ports, and a CompactFlash slot, says the company.

HMI development platform includes touchscreen display

Precision Technology Inc. (PTI) announced a HMI (human machine interface) development platform that runs Windows CE on a TI OMAP3530 processor, and will soon be offered with Android. The Flash Board provides five- or seven-inch touchscreens, 256MB of RAM and 512MB of flash, DVI-D video output, an SD slot, serial and USB OTG ports, and Wi-Fi, the company says.

Mini PC offers E6xx Atom CPUs

Habey USA announced a fanless, ultra-compact PC using Intel's recently announced E6xx Atom. The BIS-6622 includes HDMI and VGA video outputs, a bay for a 1.8-inch disk drive, two gigabit Ethernet ports, and four external USB 2.0 ports, according to the company.

Oracle announces Unbreakable Enterprise Linux kernel

Oracle has spun a new version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) it claims is more than 75 percent faster at OLTP tasks and 137 percent faster in SSD access. The “Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel” was announced at Oracle World, which also featured announcements of Oracle Fusion Applications, MySQL 5.5, Java enhancements, and a Linux-ready “Exalogic Elastic Cloud.”

Qt gets faster, adds touch UI stack

Nokia's Qt Software subsidiary released version 4.7 of its Qt cross-platform application and UI framework, touted for offering much faster performance. The Linux-compatible Qt 4.7 adds two building blocks of an upcoming high-level animation- and touch-enabled UI stack called Qt Quick: a Javascript-based QML language and a “Qt Declarative” C++ module.

Intel, AMD maintain shares amidst fierce competition

Intel and Advanced Micro Devices held their respective market shares of the worldwide processor market in the second quarter, according to iSuppli. The market research firm described the ongoing competition between the chipmakers as an “epic competitive struggle.”

Enea, NetLogic ship Linux development platform for MIPS

Enea announced the release of a Linux configuration and build environment integrated with NetLogic Microsystems' Linux software development kit (SDK). Billed as “an intuitive and extensible Linux jump start kit,” and free to customers using NetLogic's MIPS-based XLP, XLR, and XLS processors, Enea's offering is said to incorporate graphical configuration, build, and debug tools.

Pixel Qi touts power-saving display for seven-inch tablets

Pixel Qi claims it will begin sampling a seven-inch transflective LCD for tablet devices by the end of this year, and deliver the display in quantity during the first half of 2011. First touted more than a year ago, the company's screens will offer both color and monochrome e-paper modes, and are said to require up to 80 percent less power of an ordinary display.

Eurotech announced a fanless, EPIC form-factor SBC based on Intel's extended-temperature Atom Z5xxP processor. Claimed to run on under seven Watts, the “Vector” is equipped with SSD (solid state disk), CompactFlash, SD, and SATA options, each of them bootable, and offers available touchscreen and S-Video interfaces and a bevy of other I/O, says the company.

HP unveils printer with detachable Android tablet

HP announced a multifunction inkjet printer that incorporates a seven-inch, detachable Android-based tablet. Based on the HP All-in-One printer, the HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One adds web browsing, Barnes & Noble eBookstore integration, and access to HP print apps and widgets via the integrated, removable Android touchscreen, all for only $399, says the company.

COM Express module gets new Atoms and Type 10 pinout

Kontron announced a COM Express module using the four extended-temperature Atom E6xx processors released by Intel earlier this week. The nanoETXexpress-TT includes soldered-on memory, a microSD slot, and a Type 10 pinout, and it's designed to tolerate temperatures ranging from -40 to 185 deg. F, the company says.

ViewSonic and Samsung tablets are U.S.-bound

Viewsonic demonstrated a 10.1-inch, Android 2.2 “G-Tablet” that's bound for U.S. sales, powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2. Meanwhile, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless say they'll offer the Android 2.2-based Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet this fall.
