Rugged CompactPCI board adopts Atom E6xx, too

GE Intelligent Platforms announced a rugged 3U CompactPCI SBC incorporating Intel's new E6xx Atom processors. The ACR301 features 1GB of soldered DDR2 SDRAM and up to 8GB of flash storage, plus four PCIe expansion slots, dual SATA ports, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, and five ruggedization levels, says the company.

Third-party I/O hubs adapt Atom E6xx for vehicle and media phone use

Two companies have spun products taking advantage of the new Atom E6xx's use of PCI Express as an interconnect. Harman International announced its ICM (IVI Compute Module) for automotive infotainment systems, and Rohm announced I/O hubs and supporting chipsets for both auto and “IP media phone” use.

Home NAS device shares files via Wi-Fi

LaCie is shipping a network-attached storage (NAS) product users can share wirelessly. The LaCie Wireless Space can be purchased with 1TB or 2TB, and is equipped with an 802.11b/g/n access point, three gigabit Ethernet ports, a 10/100 Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 Host ports, plus UPnP/DLNA and iTunes support, says the company.

Avaya spins Android videoconferencing tablet

Avaya announced an an 11.6-inch WXGA tablet and docking station that runs Android, along with additional enterprise-focused videoconferencing products and services. Avaya Flare Experience runs on the Atom-based, tablet-like Avaya Desktop Video Device, and offers collaboration capabilities across video, voice and text, says the company.

It’s a MID, a tablet, a netbook, even an external display!

Always Innovating says its new “Mini Book” mobile internet device rides piggyback on a “Smart Book” tablet, which in turn can be plugged into a keyboard to become a netbook. Built using the 1GHz Texas Instruments DaVinci DM3730 processor, the modular, hackable devices are further claimed to switch between Android, Ubuntu, Chrome OS, and AIOS Linux distros at the touch of a button.

Nano-ITX board uses new E6xx Atoms

Emerson Network Power announced a Nano-ITX motherboard that uses Intel's new E6xx Atoms in 600MHz and 1GHz versions, and runs MeeGo Linux. The NITX-300 includes four serial ports, an SSD (solid state disk) connector, plus slots for microSD, PCI Express x1, and PCI Express Mini devices, the company says.

PCI-104 SBC offers new Atom E6xx processors

Advantech unveiled a PCI-104 SBC (single board computer) based on Intel's new Atom E6xx processors. The PCM-3364 offers CAN bus and half-size Mini PCI Express expansion, supports dual displays (CRT and LVDS), and is offered in an extended-temperature (-40 to 185 deg. F), the company says.

Dell Streak, Evo 4G tailored for mobile healthcare

Dell announced a version of its Dell Streak mini-tablet aimed at electronic medical record (EMR) applications, while Sprint and Calgary Scientific are prepping a version of the HTC Evo 4G with Calgary's ResolutionMD Mobile medical imaging software. Meanwhile, a major market for mobile healthcare is emerging, although federal regulations could be an obstacle, says eWEEK.

HTC unveils two Android 2.2 phones plus web services

HTC announced two Android 2.2 smartphones with an upgraded HTC Sense UI layer and “HTCSense.com” connected services. The 4.3-inch HTC Desire HD is essentially an Evo 4G clone without the 4G, but adding a new 1GHz Qualcomm 8255 Snapdragon processor, while the 3.7-inch HTC Desire Z is a T-Mobile G2 twin, featuring an 800MHz processor and a QWERTY slider.

Dell convertible has unusual hinge design

Dell will release a convertible mobile device later this year that can be either used as a tablet PC, or reconfigured into a netbook-style machine complete with a keyboard. The Inspiron Duo was shown off during an Intel Developer Forum (IDF) keynote yesterday by Dell executive David Zavelson.

Products exploit new Atom’s PCI Express interconnect

Intel's new Atom E6xx is attracting software and hardware designed to leverage its use of PCI Express as an interconnect. Real-Time Systems announced a hypervisor designed to leverage the chipmaker's own EG20T I/O controller, while STMicroelectronics says it will replace the latter with a device tailored for automotive in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.

Computer module tries on new Atom E6xx

Eurotech announced a new member of its Catalyst computer-on-module (COM) family, based on the new Intel Atom E6xx processor. The Catalyst TC offers up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, along with PCI Express expansion and a variety of interfaces including SATA, gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, and CAN, says the company.

ARM and Trident link up on Cortex-A9 STB design

ARM and set-box semiconductor vendor Trident Microsystems say they have developed an Android-ready, HTML5-savvy IP-STB reference design that builds upon a Trident SoC equipped with the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. Meanwhile, the BBC-backed Project Canvas partnership, which aims to build an open internet-connected TV platform, released specs and announced 40 supporters for its Linux based STB design.

Splashtop fast-boot tech opens up with new MeeGo version

DeviceVM previewed a new MeeGo-based version of its Splashtop instant-on distribution at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), effectively opening up the technology to Linux developers. The distribution is already being made available to OEMs, with end user upgrades available in the first half of 2011, says the company.

Cortex-A9 SoC clocks to 2GHz, targets mini-desktops

ARM joined China-based Nufront to announce the availability of a 40nm system-on-chip with dual ARM Cortex-A9 cores clocked from 1.6GHz to 2GHz. Apparently based on ARM's “Osprey” design, the NuSmart 2816 can run on as little as two Watts, offers 3D and 1080p processor engines, and targets not only netbooks and tablets, but also all-in-one desktops, says Nufront.
