Linux Mint 9 offers new software manager, backup tool

The Linux Mint team has released the final version of Linux Mint 9 (“Isadora”), based on Ubuntu 10.04. Linux Mint 9 features a new software manager with 30,000 packages, a new backup tool, and menu and interface improvements, says the team.

SMB network appliance supports Core i7

Axiomtek announced its first network appliance incorporating Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processors. The Linux-ready NA-510 uses a 1U-height form factor, and is equipped with an Intel Q57 Express chipset, 8GB of DDR3 memory, MiniPCI or PCIe expansion, dual 2.5-inch SATA drives, and eight gigabit Ethernet ports, with two pairs supporting LAN bypass.

European embedded Linux conference colocates with GStreamer event

The Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) announced the program for the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE), scheduled for Oct. 26-28 in Cambridge, U.K. ELCE 2010 features keynotes by MIPS/Linux maintainer Ralf Baechle and Texas Instruments OMAP director Ari Rauch, sessions on mobile Linux, Android, and MeeGo, plus a co-located GStreamer conference.

Kyocera debuts Android phone on pre-paid Cricket network

Pre-paid mobile carrier Cricket Communications announced Kyocera's first Android phone, the 3.5-inch Sanyo Zio — sold for $250 without a contract, plus $55 a month for unlimited usage. Meanwhile, Dell's similarly low-end, Android-based “Dell Aero” phone, launched by AT&T on Monday, has received mixed reactions in the press, according to eWEEK.

Netbook’s first with dual-core Atom

Asus announced a netbook that not only includes Intel's dual-core Atom N550, but also offers USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0. The Eee PC 1015PEM provides up to 13 hours of battery life, running either Windows 7 Starter Edition or the Linux-based “Express Gate” operating environment, the company says.

HD-ready IP set-top offers Android integration

N Media Corp. announced that its “!ROFL” IPTV set-top box (STB) now offers an Android-based software stack, enabling users to download apps from Android Market. The box supports 1080p playback, and offers 32GB of NAND flash along with Ethernet, HDMI, and USB connectivity, says the company.

Next-gen ARM cores break memory barrier, add hypervisor support

ARM Holdings has provided new details about its next-generation Cortex-A series processor core, currently code-named “Eagle.” In a presentation at this week's “Hot Chips” conference, the company described relevant extensions to its ARMv7-A architecture, including hypervisor extensions and the ability to address more than 4GB of RAM.

Multi-touch tablet will run Linux, Android

The Belgian company Point Net announced a ten-inch tablet that is available now with Linux, with an Android version promised for the future. The Dune has a resistive touchscreen, 1.67GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3G cellular modem, according to the company.

Mini-ITX spearheads growth in embedded motherboard market

Following a recession-caused contraction in 2008 and 2009, the embedded motherboards market is rebounding, with double-digit growth forecast for the next five year, according to VDC Research. Mini-ITX is the most popular form factor, but Nano-ITX, Pico-ITX, and Mobile-ITX will grow rapidly too, the research firm says.

Nanoresonators create ultra-high-res displays

Eat your heart out, “Retina display.” A new technology unveiled yesterday will allow creating pixels eight times smaller than the ones on Apple's iPhone 4, eliminate the need for polarizer layers, and allow screens to make much more efficient use of available light, say University of Michigan researchers.

Linux distro focuses on audio recording

Trinity Audio Group announced an upgrade to its Linux-based “audio operating system,” with an improved user interface, the real-time kernel 2.6.31, and a player that lets users change the speed of a song without altering pitch. “Transmission 4.0” is available as a download, on a USB stick, or preloaded on a netbook or ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), the company says.

Intel and Nokia pick MeeGo for mobile 3D research

Nokia, Intel and the University of Oulu have opened the newest branch of Intel Labs Europe, which will be dedicated to researching compelling new mobile user experiences — particularly in 3D. The “Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center” will be “well aligned” with the MeeGo open source platform launched earlier this year, the companies said.

AMD unveils new x86 microarchitectures

Advanced Micro Devices is unveiling the technical details of two new microprocessors, “Bobcat” and “Bulldozer,” during the Hot Chips conference at Stanford University. The designs, addressing low-power netbooks and desktops on the one hand and high-performance PCs/servers on the other, are expected to begin sampling later this year.

New QorIQ SoCs feature datapath acceleration

Freescale Semiconductor announced three new Linux-ready, PowerPC-based QorIQ system-on-chips (SoCs) incorporating the company's Data Path Acceleration Architecture (DPAA) technology. The single-core 800MHz P1017, dual-core 800MHz P1023, and quad-core 1.2GHz P2040 processors all offer the DPAA programming model, which is said to accelerate packet parsing, classification, and distribution, says the company.
