Opera Mini 5 browser released for Android

Opera Software has released a beta version of its Opera Mini 5 mobile browser for Android. Opera Mini 5 offers features including tabbed browsing, a password manager, bookmarks, and visual bookmarks known as “Speed Dial,” but there's no multi-touch support yet, according to the company.

Fanless PC has two PCI slots

Avalue announced a fanless box PC that incorporates two PCI expansion slots. The EPS-AT270-2PCI includes an Intel Atom N270 processor and up to 2GB of RAM, room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive, six serial ports, and an ExpressCard slot, the company says.

Rugged COM format gets even tougher

MEN Micro announced a COM (computer-on-module) employing its own ESMexpress format along with Intel's Atom Z5xxP or PT processors. The XM1L has up to 2GB of soldered-on RAM plus a SATA port, uses less than seven watts, operates from -40 to 185 deg. F, and withstands shocks up to 15G, the company says.

N900 gains VoIP service — and will soon offer MeeGo

VoX Communications announced it will resell Nokia's Maemo Linux-based N900 smartphone with a mobile VoIP plan offering unlimited data and voice service. Meanwhile, Nokia confirmed that the N900 will be the first smartphone to run the Moblin/Maemo mashup, MeeGo, when a preliminary version of the operating system debuts at the end of the month.

CompactPCI boards adopt Pineview Atoms

Adlink is shipping a series of 3U CompactPCI processor blades with Intel Atom N450, D410, or dual-core D510 processors. The cPCI-3610 Series blades come in 4HP, 8HP, and 12HP versions, offer gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, and serial connectivity, and provide power consumption ranging from 15.2 to 19.35 Watts.

Shoebox PC’s built around COM Express module

Kontron announced an Intel Core 2 Duo computer designed to be integrated into the chassis of automation devices. The KIC-MC has space for two 2.5-inch hard disk drives, includes four gigabit Ethernet ports, sports nine USB 2.0 ports, and supports both LVDS and DVI-I displays, the company says.

Industrial PC gets 3G, dual-core Atom

Lanner announced a fanless industrial PC with available GPS and 3G cellular capacities, plus a dual-core 1.66GHz Intel Atom D510 CPU. The LEC-7100 has a CompactFlash slot and 2.5-inch HDD (hard disk drive) bay, two gigabit Ethernet ports, VGA and DVI-D video outputs, and digital I/O, the company says.

Carrier-grade distro supports HP BladeSystem

Wind River announced that its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) operating system, development tools, and build system now supports HP BladeSystem carrier-grade and enterprise server blades. Wind River Linux 3.0 is the first registered CGL 4.0 distribution supported on HP ProLiant server blades for the HP BladeSystem, claims Intel subsidiary Wind River.

DIN-rail PC runs Linux on 150MHz SoC

Advantech has announced a box PC intended for DIN-rail mounting that uses the company's x86-compatible EVA-X4150 SoC (system-on-chip). The Linux-ready UNO-1140 has CompactFlash storage, two USB 2.0 ports, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, a VGA output, and either four or eight serial ports, the company says.

Linux-ready plug-in enables IPv6 traffic over IPv4 nets

Access subsidiary IP Infusion announced a new Linux-ready “stateless tunneling” product that enables the coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Based on the IETF's “6rd” (IPv6 rapid deployment) specifications, ZebOS Rapid Deployment forwards IPv6 traffic though existing IPv4 networks, enabling carriers to more easily transition to IPv6, says IP Infusion.

The Linux-ready, 1U rackmount “CAK-2000” offers a dual-core QorIQ P2020, clocked to 1.2 GHz and equipped with an integrated security engine, and also provides up to 4GB DDR3 RAM and six gigabit Ethernet ports.

Motorola Android phone launches with Yahoo search

AT&T launched its first Android phone, the Motorola Backflip, for $100 after rebate — and with Yahoo as the default search engine. Meanwhile, at our sister publication, eWEEK, analysts sort through the impact of Apple's Android-related patent lawsuit against HTC, suggesting Palm or even Microsoft could be the next targets.

SODIMM module upgrades to Marvell PXA300

— E-con Systems announced a SODIMM-sized processor module based on Marvell's 624MHz PXA300 processor. The Linux-ready eSOM300 offers up to 256MB of RAM, up to 1GB of flash storage, an optional touchscreen controller, and a “local bus expansion header,” according to the company.
