ARM9 SoC gains lower-cost sibling

Fujitsu announced an ARM9-based SoC (system on chip) including the company's “Coral PA” 2D/3D graphics controller. The MB86R03 “Jade L” is clocked at 320MHz, supports dual displays with resolutions up to 1024 x 768 pixels, and costs less than existing Jade SoCs, the company says.

Dual-display e-reader offers Android telephony

1Crosstech demonstrated a dual-display Android MID and e-reader device at last week's CeBit show, says ARMDevices.net. The MIDHybrid offers a 6-inch E Ink monochrome display on one side and a 3.2-inch HVGA display on the other, and provides 3G telephony, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a VGA webcam, according to the story.

Motorola Android phone launches with Yahoo search

AT&T launched its first Android phone, the Motorola Backflip, for $100 after rebate — and with Yahoo as the default search engine. Meanwhile, at our sister publication, eWEEK, analysts sort through the impact of Apple's Android-related patent lawsuit against HTC, suggesting Palm or even Microsoft could be the next targets.

Android on MIPS platform gains virtual emulator

MIPS Technologies announced the availability of new debug and development tools for its Android on MIPS development platform. MIPS is now offering the open source QEMU emulator, as well as Viosoft's Arriba development tools for QEMU, and has added a compiler and development GUI to its Android Native Development Kit (NDK).

Hypervisor supports Linux guests

Enea announced a multi-core-focused “Enea Hypervisor,” which is based on its OSE real-time operating system, but supports Linux clients via its Linx inter-process communication protocol. Meanwhile, Enea announced that its Android Competence Center has been chosen by mobile anti-malware firm Fatskunk to develop an Android proof of concept.

Mini PC includes Ion 2 graphics, dual-core Atom

Zotac announced a mini-PC incorporating Intel's dual-core Atom D510 and Nvidia's “Ion 2” GPU (graphics processing unit). The Zbox HD-ID11 includes both HDMI and dual-link DVI graphics outputs, wired and wireless networking, six USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA port, and a bay for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive.

Industrial computer debuts Em-ITX format

Via Technologies announced an embedded industrial computer based on uts Em-ITX form factor. The fanless, ruggedized ART-3000 is built around Via's EITX-3000 main board, which is equipped with a 1.3GHz Via Nano processor, and supports up to three displays and two independent video content streams, says Via.

NAS reference platform builds on Pineview Atoms

Intel announced a SOHO-oriented network-attached storage (NAS) reference platform based on its D410 and dual-core D510 “Pineview” Atom processors and 82801R I/O controller. NAS vendors LaCie, LG Electronics, Qnap, Synology, and Thecus will incorporate the Linux-compatible platform in upcoming NAS devices, starting with the Blu-ray burner-equipped LG N4B2, says Intel.

Android comes to landline phones

At CeBIT this week, Motorola demonstrated an Android-based “HS1001” cordless IP phone manufactured by Binatone and built around the DSP Group's DECT-compatible XpandR chipset. Meanwhile, DSP Group showed its own Android-based IP phone reference design based on the XpandR II chipset.

Kontron is readying an Intel Atom Z530-based box computer designed for rugged railway applications. The MicroSpace MPCX28R Railway Box PC is protected for railway use with EN50155 certification, TX compliance, extended temperature support, 1.5kV isolated power, and M12 connectors for Fast Ethernet, USB, and power, says the company.

ARM9-based Android tablets to sell for under $200

Archos announced two low-cost, WiFi-enabled tablets that run Android on a 600MHz ARM9 processor. The Archos 7 Home Tablet offers a seven-inch touchscreen and is designed for mobile use, while the eight-inch Archos 8 Home Tablet is designed for fixed kitchen-computer and digital picture frame (DPF) duties, says the company.

Cortex-A8 dev kit runs Linux

Digi International says it is shipping a development kit targeting development of wireless multimedia applications using Freescale's i.MX515 SoC (system on chip). The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX51 Digi JumpStart Kit includes an ARM Cortex-A8-based module, a baseboard, a seven-inch touchscreen, and a BSP (board support package), the company says.

Intel and Orange partner on MeeGo

Intel and European mobile operator Orange announced an agreement to deliver Orange multimedia services for Intel Atom-based devices running the new Linux-based, Intel/Nokia MeeGo mobile OS. The partnership aims to develop a common MeeGo-based software framework across multiple devices, say the companies.

LiMo joins mobile app standard effort

The LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation has endorsed a new Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) industry group established by mobile carriers to devise a common app format. The WAC format will build upon two web-based mobile widget standards: the Open Mobile Terminal Project's BONDI and the Joint Innovation Lab's JIL initiative.

Intel’s netbook/tablet adds Pineview chip, e-reader support

Intel has redesigned its Classmate convertible netbook and tablet PC with an Intel Atom N450 “Pineview” processor, says eWEEK. Other new Classmate features are said to include a higher-capacity 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD), a higher-resolution, water-resistant screen, and new e-book reading software.
